Since you're giving us just 10 episodes each season, it seems like a misstep to give an entire episode to one side character. I just don't get it.

One thing that crossed my mind while trying to get through it last night was maybe the main cast had fairly limited filming time this year? My inner cynic speaking. It's also totally plausible that they're just trying really hard to branch out and not use the same general formula after a dozen years, which I get - this one just didn't do its job very well. The Suburbs ep last season was a great example of where they switched things up a bit and still killed it.

The only thing I liked about this episode was that they tried to tie it to the last episode.

Some pretty big swings and misses this year. Very ambitious season - I liked the old lady laugh track episode, but in general did not love the Gang Turns Black, Making a Murderer OR Cricket's episode. 4 ambitious episodes out of 10 is too many in my opinion......should be more like 1-2 max.

Also, 1 episode left and lots of characters we haven't seen this year.....no Waitress......no McPoyles.......no The Lawyer.....

The bar is high with this show. I didn't love either of those. Gang Turns Black was interesting and smart in terms of social commentary, but not that funny, in my opinion.

Yeah, that's the key, and maybe the source of frustration for some when we rank and put stuff under a microscope every week.

There aren't really genuinely bad episodes in the series, aside from arguably a small handful like Frank's Brother. But mediocre, "I chuckled a few times," "that one scene was pretty good I guess" fare is inevitably going to bring out debate and critique, when we know what they're capable of. Cliché, but they're a victim of their own success.

Also, I'm totally with you in that with a pure comedy, I'm judging 95% based on how hard I laughed watching an episode. Creativity and experimentation for its own sake in an irreverent comedy isn't going to do much for me, but I understand that varies by person.

Agree that the reveal and tie ins with the gang were good but the rest wasn't super memorable. I think it's definitely plausible that Danny, Kaitlin, and Charlie all have more filming commitments that would yield an episode like this

Absolutely, which kinda worries me about the next two seasons that they have definitely been renewed for. Rob has the Minecraft movie, and they're all busy doing things.

Definitely a little weaker of an episode, following the last few weeks especially. Hoping it was not the pinnacle of this post, because I've been really looking forward to some huge payoff towards the end of the season:

I did like the Disney parallels in this one though. The lemon scenes made me laugh too.

Haha yes, cricket going back for the lemons then eating them.... Even the lesser episodes of this show have so much gold

This episode was definitely a result of their schedules.

Solid episode, still not too fond of this season so far, but it had a funny/good payoff in the end. I didn't expect the ending, I assumed the reveal would be that the girl was Cricket's sister or something

This is right on. A few seasons ago I realized they were moving away from trying to be a laugh-out-loud comedy and were branching out a little bit more. It seems they're trying to go more for thematic and creative episodes (which doesn't automatically mean it's for the best).

When they first started changing direction, I quit laughing as much and thought the show was getting worse. Then I started realizing that's not what they were shooting for. Now with these newer episodes, I find myself entertained on a consistent basis, but I am not cracking up or quoting lines all the time. I wouldn't say that I enjoy this show as much as I used to back in seasons 3-5, but it's still pretty damn good...just in a different way.

My issue with the show has been the (I guess you could call it this) flanderization of characters, mainly Dennis and Mac. The idea of Dennis being a serial killer and Mac being gay used to be hinted/just small personality traits that the gang would make fun of. I do feel like, however, Mac actually coming out was a good move/much better than the middle ground the past few seasons.

Their season finales are always strong episodes. I expect nothing less tonight!

    Tonight's synopsis

Dennis reveals he has a baby from his Wade Boggs layover in North Dakota. Everyone offers a solution for how to get him out of this jam. Mac suggests they pretend to be a couple and Frank wants to make the broad a "decent" proposal b/c $1 million for sex is indecent. In the end, Dennis has to decide which life he wants to continue to lead
