I have not heard any of the tables you mentioned, but I am confused by the fact that, if you are really looking a turntable that can be customized and upgraded later on, you are going to limit yourself by getting a turntable with a built-in phono preamp. That does not really make sense to me.

If you really want a table that you can keep for years and upgrade whenever you see fit, and stay in the same price range, why not grab a U-Turn Orbit?

You can get a Basic for $180, add a Pluto preamp from them ($90), and you will be set for years. If you can swing the money, you can even go for a Plus.

Once again, I have not heard the table as I am overseas, but to me, this sounds like the best idea. Later on, you can upgrade whatever component you deem necessary, which you could not with a table that has a phono preamp built in (I know that theoretically you can turn it off, but this is not the same as having a turntable without one to begin with).

    Just my two cents.

    Thanks for the input.

The Orbit U-Turn isn't stocked in my country and doesn't even deliver to the UK, so it would be pretty expensive to deliver to where I am in the world unfortunately. With all of this in mind, it doesn't end up being too good price wise for what I'm getting.

A built in phono preamp is kind of what I'm looking for for now, due to the fact that I spent some money on some really nice active speakers (which decreases the budget elsewhere) and the fact that I do not have a lot of space for a full set up. Down the line, I'm more than likely to invest further into a full set up, but for the next few years I'm looking at a turntable with a built in preamp hence the two I have in mind.

Thanks a lot though, I've seen nothing but love for the U-Turn Orbit and they look beautiful.

Sorry, I did not see that you are located in the UK. If you already have active speakers and want to save some space then one of the two you mentioned surely is the way to go. As for which one to pick, unfortunately I can't really help you.

Set up one of those 6 cube organizers from Target and a couple of days and it looks amazing. Using about 5 1/3 cubes for my records with my box of 7 "s taking up the rest of the 5th cube space.

Got a storage box through Sleeve City. Works great and can fit plenty of 7"

Just picked up The Killers - Hot Fuss, Tom Petty - Greatest Hits, Weezer - Blue and Sublime - ST today at the record store. A cool $112 :(

  15. The Denon requires an external amp, whereas the AT LP120 has an internal one, correct?

The pre amp sucks on the 120. Most receivers that have a phone line have a better preamp

The Denon also has a pre-amp that you can turn on or off. It's a bit of a pain in the ass because it's a switch labeled "EQ" underneath the platter that you have to take off the mat to get to. But like Brenden said, most receivers will have a phono input.

@Jason Tate I know you're a fan so figured I'd mention it (and for anyone else), but I got an email from SRC about August & Everything After and Recovering The Satellites getting repressed and they're up for pre-order. Can't find much on the actual pressing information though such as gate fold or weight details.
