I was thinking this the other day, I kind of wonder if Matt feels like he backed into a corner. I mean let's be real, he's not calling any shots in Blink, it's all Mark. So, I kind of wonder if Matt is nervous to speak up if he were to feel a certain way. But at the same time he kind of should thought this would come with the job of playing with Blink. But his communication with Dan and Derek is obviously not at top level because even Derek told he doesn't speak to Matt as much as he would like. I don't know, it just feels like Dan and Derek are ready to do a new Trio record but they know they have to wait.

 

I was glad to see Dan have his solo album and then working with Brendan on a new Falcon record to keep busy most of 2016. And Derek had his solo thing and then some Suicide Machines stuff as well. Now is when it gets interesting. Dan and Derek want to roll some new Trio stuff and don't really have another project to work on. I can't imagine Dan doing more solo touring after this next run. So I sort of wonder if Dan and Derek maybe get some new projects going if Blink starts taking up too much time.

 

Dan has been recording some demos in his studio lately.

 

Yeah, hopefully Blink's success didn't go to Matt's head and he put Alkaline Trio to the side. Travis seems like a guy that would understand Matt's position with all the stuff he juggles, whereas Mark seems like a guy who's all in for Blink, finally has Blink to himself, and would be shaken up a bit if Blink had to adjust their schedule for Matt to work on Alkaline Trio again.

Finger's crossed Matt has been secretly sneaking Alkaline Trio stuff behind fan's backs to surprise them. Would be awesome.

 

Yeah I agree with you about Matt not calling any shots and him backed into a corner. I don't know if Matt is nervous to speak up or if Matt is completely fine with everything, that's impossible to know unless you're Matt.

I do think that the massive success of the album and tour probably changed a lot of plans in both the Trio and blink camp. I think blink was hoping the album and tour would be a success but nowhere near how big it actually got so I'm sure they're feeling pressure of adding more tour dates that they didn't anticipate doing as well as the deluxe album. At this stage in blink's career they really need to strike while the iron is still hot. And on the flip side Matt is having more success and making more money than he ever did in his life and who knows maybe he's 100% happy with everything that's been going on. But as I said even if Matt wants to press pause or take a break from blink right now he's stuck and kind of can't.

I, unfortunately, wouldn't be surprised if with the continued success of blink if the Trio took one of those popular "hiatus" for awhile and we don't get any new Trio stuff for another few years.

 

I keep telling myself these 3 Trio shows in Chicago are a good sign of something.

 

I don't think there's really been a lot of Matt's songwriting in the new Blink stuff, and he's a guy who seems to constantly write. I'm sure while Mark and Travis are doing their things in the studio, Matt has at least been writing new Trio songs, whether it's while Blink's been recording or while they're on tour in their separate buses, etc.

I hope these new Blink songs have a lot more of Matt's input and songwriting in them, and they aren't just more of the same.

 

Yeah it would be interesting to see what exactly Matt wrote on California both musically and lyric wise. I have to assume that the parts he sings he wrote (considering 95% of the stuff Mark or Tom wrote in the past they sang) but who knows. Matt has said in interviews his favorite lyrics he wrote were his verse in BTD and you can tell Left Alone has Matt's finger prints on it.

I agree I hope as the new band continues on they get more comfortable with each other and Matt has a larger/louder voice with the process. It just seems like he was along for the ride for the most part, which I hope isn't the case.

I don't think people should worry about Trio. The success of California pushed it a little further back but once the Europe tour is over, I'm sure Matt will be full focus Trio, if they don't find time before that and I'm sure he already has plenty of material ready to go that he's worked on on his own. He's always making music. Mark loves Trio too and he won't begrudge Matt that one bit. You guys sound like you think Mark has a shock bracelet on Matt's ankle that's not coming off til he says so lol.

Nah I don't think Mark or Travis would stand in Matt's way if he wanted to do Trio stuff but I think right now blink is Matt's #1 priority and that's what he's focused on right now. The question is whether Matt will have enough time to do anything Trio related this year.

And Blink should be his main priority and it would be wrong on his part if he didn't follow through with his commitments with Blink.

 

Yeah I mean I get people's pessimism but I feel confident after the Europe tour they'll give Trio their time to get going. Being that Mark and Travis know how it feels to be held up by one member, I feel they'd be sympathetic to Dan and Derek that their main band is on standby, ya know?

 

If the deluxe edition does add 14 songs, that would be 30 tracks in less than a year. From 2003 to 2015 blink had 35 (counting Not Now and Another Girl Another Planet) lol

 

They just need to release them all lol

I'm not worried about losing Trio, never was, just incredibly annoyed with it being pushed back. Nothing about Matt leaving Trio for Blink outside of $$$ would make much sense. The reason he has so many projects is because he gets bored doing one thing for too long and making Blink his primary outlet would mean giving up a shit ton of creative control he has with Trio. They're completely different bands. Also, Mark and Travis asked him to join knowing full well he had another full-time band, it's not at all like Tom who felt he outgrew blink all together and wanted to ditch. I'm sure that they've come to terms with the fact that he's going to need time off for it at some point long long ago, and doesn't Travis have an album already done with another band as well he's waiting to get out? That said, I think Matt may have just underestimated the length of Blink commitments with the surprise success. We most likely won't be getting new Trio until next year.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Mark and Dan pretty good friends ?

 

Yeah I think it all depends on what blink's plans are after the European tour. Originally they were going to get back into the studio in early 2018 to record a new album, as Mark wanted to put a new album out every 2 years like the old days but if they're really going to release the deluxe album with 14 new songs it makes you wonder if they still plan on going back into the studio at the beginning of 2018.

I'm sure no matter what that after the European tour blink will take a month or so off outside of a spot show here or there around the holidays so that could be an opening for the Trio to record their new album. When they will tour, that's another issue.

 

This is one of those "YOLO" opportunities that one would be crazy to not accept, and I'm sure Dan and Derek are both extremely aware of that, and supportive. Dan's even mentioned how stoked he is for Matt right now, so I'm sure they're being patient, and Alkaline Trio will come back when they can.

 

Agreed they seem supportive and I believe both blink and trio will coexist, nothing to fear on either end

 

My guess is Trio gets in the studio in late summer/early fall. Records a record and then tours through winter of 2017/18, release the record around late winter, tour some more in Spring, then Blink goes back into the studio in summer of 2018 to get a record out around Christmas time 2018. In between there Matt will probably do some one off shows at festivals and what not with Blink.

Just pure speculation. But you gotta figure Dan and Derek will be hoping to do some Trio stuff after that Blink Euro tour. I do worry a little bit about all of this running around possibly getting to Matt and wearing him down...and the guy does have some substance abuse problems in his past....but he's always been a workhorse who didn't seem to like taking time off for very long.
