what a dickkkkkkkkkkk I can't wait till his fragile sense of persecution tries to come up with some convoluted excuse to justify this just like his whining about critics not liking 1989

if you want to support someone taking advantage of and making it more difficult for smaller artists to continue to get work, that's on you

I'm not going to stop supporting Ryan Adams, a musician, whose relevant medium is music, because he was selling a t-shirt (which I literally never would have seen if not for this), that looks like a guitar pedal that I didn't even know existed.

This is a dick act from a guy with a long and storied history of being an ass. The hyperbole of Ryan "making it difficult for small artists to get work" is a stretch. This doesn't affect their guitar pedal sales. No money or opportunity was taken out of anyone's pocket. It was of poor character to use the design but this really is of no relevance to the music that I choose to consume.

Care to explain? Dude made a poor choice. I'm not going to scratch years of listening to him and buying his records over an ugly Tshirt.

I'm assuming you've never listened to any artists that made poor choices?

he preaches about supporting small artists, but hes stealing from someone who designed that piece of art? Like, thats pretty shitty?

Dont get the needless hostility, its just kind of shitty knowingly supporting someone whos stealing ya know. Listening and supporting are two different things. I listen to problematic artists but dont support them financially.

I'm not being hostile, so I'm sorry it came off that way. I recognized that it's a shitty thing to do, and I hope he clears it up. The shirt is down now anyways, so to me it's whatever.

And not financially supporting problematic artists is your choice, but if I'm going to listen to a record, I'm going to buy it.

It directly affects the market of the pedal builder from being able to sell shirts from his own design. It just ... does. Support who you want, it's fine, and he was one of my favorite artists. It's incredibly disigenuous to post things about supporting small artists and that people should buy his record, while directly profiting off of the work of muuuuuuch smaller artists.

But was he GOING to sell t-shirts? It's a pedal design. He sells guitar pedals. If he sells t-shirts with his pedal designs on it, I change my stance on this entirely. But he doesn't. If I sell a shirt that has a drawing of a Fruit Rollup on it, I'm not cutting into the sale of Fruit Rollups. I'm an asshole for using it, but I'm not hurting their business. He got caught, took it down, and in the end didn't tap in to anybody's income stream.

He got caught. He'll get plenty of shit, might even get sued, idk. But everyone will be okay.

And I know fruit Rollups are a ridiculous comparison, but you also compared me to a racist apologist. So we can both let things slide

Sounds like his response before taking it down was pretty crappy but are we sure that shirt is even stealing? Wouldn't be surprised if that's protected under fair use/parody law. I could be way wrong there but like it took me three seconds of googling to find band shirts that are the front of a big muff with the word big muff replaced by the band name in that font.

he quite literally already sells shirts, so yes. as do most pedal builders and, like, most people who own a company.

that isn't a fair use. fair use has to be transformative and cannot effect the potential market of the copyright holder.

infringement happens all the time. just because other people don't sue in other cases doesn't mean that it doesn't happen elsewhere. the statute of limitations is 3 years for infringement. i doubt electroharmonix really cares that much about it since they're a big operation. a small builder just getting his start obviously has much more at stake. the dude hasn't even been building for a year now and he already has a major artist stealing from him.
