it's been a minute since i've listened to either but I'd say it's a little different. there's not a lot to go off of from online unfortunately, but it was a collab ep between bedhead and macha, a band they grew up with in Texas. bedhead ended up breaking up before the project was finished, so this was the final thing they put together.

 

just found out bedhead and david bazan had a project together called overseas that dropped a record in 2013. need to check that out.

 

this really was bizarre, haha. i wonder if the whole band was stoked on this, or if one person had to beg for them to do this. i enjoyed that, the ep have a bunch of covers?

 

that i don't know, but my understanding of the story was that they were all good friends growing up and wanted to do a project together. i like the idea of two bands coming together to make an ep rather than just doing your typical split.

and i think believe is the only cover, the rest of the release is original

 

wait, members of both bands wrote all the songs together?? that's so sick. It reminds me of the Touche Amore/Self Defense EP thing, it's a cool idea that doesn't get done a lot, but seems like it'd be a lot easier to do in 2016?

 

yeah they worked on all the songs together! Haven't checked out the Touche/SDF EP but I like songs from both of those bands so I'll check it out. Do you know of any other EPs/LPs that were collabs like that?

 

That's cool, I'll have to try and find the full release if it's floating around anywhere. What about Macha, they good? I haven't listened to the SDF/TA EP in a while, but it was pretty cool, definitely something to like if you enjoy either band. I don't know any others like that, exactly; usually gets billed either as someone producing or as a whole other project. I'll think about it though, look through my library and iPod and see if I come up with anything.

 

Based on my 2017 plans, y'all can expect me to just bump this thread constantly.

Listening to American Water for the first time. Vocally, it's just slightly drawlier than I'm used to with this kind of music, but I couldn't care less that that element isn't hooking me right away. The guitar (both in tone and performance) is beautiful, the drums are the definition of 'effective in their simplicity,' and the lyrics are so banal, relatable and deceptively emotive. In fact, the whole thing I think could be described as deceptively emotive. Easily the most I've ever liked something by someone associated with Pavement (hoping my 90's deep dive will finally make them click with me).

I usually just listen to Quarantine the Past. It's actually where I first discovered them. Though I have, and love CR,CR/ Slanted & Enchanted.

How come Guided By Voices is allowed to just worm their way into my head like this? Been humming kicker of elves and tractor rape chain for days. Really love the short song that feels complete style of writing

 

GBV is the perfect band because they just write a hook and play it for 1:35 and call it a song. It's genius.

 

Yeah, it works out for them. They really know how to structure a song to be maximally efficient, there's no room for filler. Even on a song like A Big Fan of the Pig Pen with that out of tune outro and everything, it just works

 

First few records of the year I've listened to include Slint's Spiderland and the dismemberment plan's emergency and I, two of my favorite finds of last year

 

Now that I'm done catching up on 2016 records just going to go through this thread from the beginning and get pretty much everything

most of this thread is golden, love 90s alt-rock/indie. anybody listens to lync? they're from olympia, wa and released only one album in 1994. there was once a rumour that modest mouse's isaac brock used to be part of the band in their early days, but i'm still not sure if it's true or not.

holy shit thanks for this this sounds great. never heard of them before and i enjoyed that a lot. Olympia really didn't fuck around, huh. some googling says that this band influenced modest mouse a lot but that isaac wasn't in it, but shrug i wasn't there

it's like my third fave by them, sometimes fourth depending on how much im feeling Good News, but i feel like it has really awesome and beautiful moments with some moments that drag a little. I feel like ten minutes less and i would feel differently, but it feels like Lonesome Crowded West took all the things I wasn't wild about and made me wild about them somehow. Dramamine is still my favorite Modest Mouse song though, and it only recently dropped from my second favorite by them

i'm always amazed at how cheaply this album was recorded because it (often) doesn't sound like it was recorded for ten bucks and beer. Bee Thousand sounds like that. Not Alien Lanes (imo)

 

yeah, i think he actually wasn't, but before i posted, i read reddit and someone said he was, so i kinda believed that random person on the internet. lync is awesome, sounds a bit like post-hardcore modest mouse. is it me, but this one sounds similar to paper thin walls?

 

I hear the similarities in places but (luckily) it's not like a rip off or anything. Super bummed to find this was not on spotify but i'll go hunting the internet for this album. What a great find / recommendation this was, i love the internet lol

 

Listening to some Unwound and Engine Down atm. Though both have tendencies that lead more into post hardcore than indie. Still they probably apply.

 

Also Building Nothing Out of Something by Modest Mouse is a great b-side/comp album. Broke, and Other People's Lives are jams.
