Blizzcon used to be such an event, even back before it was easy to find a rip after the stream I would look up bootlegs of people in the back of the crowd secretly recording lol or hit the forums/mmochampion the day of constantly refreshing to see what got revealed and all the bullet points hit on the various panels. Even later blizzcons stick out in my memory such as the warlords of draenor reveal and deep dive, even if that expansion flopped the hype surrounding it was extremely real because of how they presented it at that show

The only reason it feels hollow in the midst of mass layoffs is because they make the awards and recognition an afterthought. Industry hardships doesn’t mean people don’t deserve to be awarded and recognized for their fantastic work but it does feel tone deaf when geoff just flies through 2-3 awards categories in 50 seconds. I think enough attention was paid to the state of the industry last night, it was addressed in some pretty thoughtful ways, but not enough attention was paid to the awards themselves imo

Totally agree. My ideal format would be a convention weekend with all the drops, which is capped off with an awards ceremony on the last night.

I get that they probably worry about viewers tuning out of the awards segment if there's no drops, but given their current throwaway sections where they hand out three awards at once with no speeches, I don't think their compromises are particularly good or fair to the developers.

(This would probably cost a ton more money though so it's unlikely to ever be considered)

  4. if you want people to as much as pretend to give a damn about the awards you gotta do the announcements.

there's a reason award show viewership is declining.

That or the reverse where you do an awards section to kick off the event and the rest of the weekend has previews and deep dives into some of the stuff we saw during the ceremony. Idk. I like the idea of a three day event with the awards show before or after a convention

I never said don’t do announcements but the balance is out of whack and makes it a slog

I'd be okay losing an announcement or 2 to not rapid-fire through the awards, or to do more spotlight segment things

But yeah I do think like @mescalineeyes said there does have to be announcements alongside the awards or people just won't watch them, as much as I'd love to say I'd still watch I wouldn't

I didn’t think I would either but I still find time most nights. It’s less than it was before, but I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much, but we did get very lucky with how well she sleeps through the night at a very young age

It's tricky. If people don't care about the awards it begs the question whether there should even be a Game Awards. But if having the Game Awards puts a spotlight on games and their developers, giving them the accolades and recognition they deserve, it'd suck to lose them.

I just think the approach of essentially trapping uninterested people into watching the awards ceremony with countless ads is wildly unbalanced and makes for awkward viewing when something like Best RPG is just casually flung out with no fanfare.

I don't mean that people shouldn't be recognized, of course they should. But I guess I'm thinking about it from multiple angles.

Putting aside the whole state of the industry thing, as a potential viewer, I think the problem runs like this: I want people and games to be recognized, but I have zero interest in an entire production watching them receive said recognition. That's the truth of it.

And most people I imagine are like me. So to pull the numbers to afford to do an entire production, you need to offer another reason for people to tune in. Even then, as I said, I didn't watch it. I just read about the announcements afterwards.

So what do you do? Not do a production at all and just do the awards through a website and mail the recognition out? If you can't make more people care enough to tune in. There's no good answer, I'm afraid.

Yeah I think they just HAVE to actually present more of the awards

And also maybe just be more knowledgeable with streaming/content creation outside of League/DOTA and shit, I get that I'm the opposite in that I don't know about these teams and coaches/players being advertised but I feel like when the list of content creators is 4 white guys with beards playing the same games and then 1 vtuber (who I hear good things about!) it shows them not being extremely in touch with what all is out there and not diversifying their approach in these outside categories and therefore causing people to care less about them in which case "yes let's just rapidfire them"

Idk what you’re talking about here at all. I’ve already said multiple times I don’t think there shouldn’t be announcements. I also don’t know how to have a conversation with somebody who didn’t watch the show about what the show should be like

I think with people with your mindset the awards show just has to accept that you're not gonna be someone watching it and not cater to you, which I think is okay. It's okay for it to not be for you and to appeal to a (possibly niche) audience who does want to watch this

And I think that's okay too. As I said above, I'm just thinking out loud about the "problem" about this being an awards show but focusing on awards the least and whether that balance can shift without making the prospect completely untenable.

The cynic in me thinks the divisive reaction to tlou2 led sony to force ads and product placement in the game as a compromise with Neil. You can make the game you want, but we have to protect our investment type of thing. I mean the comments are already off on the naughty dog trailer.

Im hyped so just a musing.

Nearly jumped on the pre-order last night but I had issues getting Final Fantasy XVI running on my PC. Going to try re-installing it on my main drive and see if it works, and if it does I'm instantly pre-ordering Rebirth.
