I’m guessing the occupied territories would become somewhat of a buffer zone?

Making NATO the hill to die on is smart. Zelensky knows that there’s no way to take back the territory that Russia has stolen. Even with US support, that option was basically impossible. He’s probably going to have to sacrifice most (if not all) of it to get any form of peace.

He also knows that any agreement Russia signs with Ukraine isn’t going to be worth the paper it’s printed on. They’ll just rearm and come back for another go.

NATO membership is pretty much the only guarantee for long term security that Ukraine can have. And if it requires sacrificing any claim to stolen territory, it may be worth making.

    why is this crazy?

it seems like the strongest guarantee against Russia trying to take more of Ukraine in the future

  10. It's crazy because people in here have been arguing for maximalist war goals and no concessions for the past 2 and a half years and accusing anyone saying different of being Putin apologists

I think realistically a negotiated peace settlement is the most likely way the current fighting will stop.

why is this so funny? I said what I said expecting NATO membership to not be a possibility. If it is, the equation changes

I am skeptical of any polling coming out of Ukraine right now for a host of reasons, but this is also the first time that the polling seems to indicate the majority of people in the country not wanting to continue fighting this war. That seems like an extremely important point to me, especially given that the United States is now, shall we say, encouraging them to lower the age of conscription from 25 to 18.

I also hear the idea of negotiating for peace right now thrown around a whole lot, and while I do think this is probably the most likely way for the current fighting to be stopped, at the same time, I do not see a lot of indicators that either side are particularly interested in this right now, and both sides would need to be for this to go anywhere.

As much as I am against Russia's invasion, and as much as I think they are in the wrong, I do not think it is so cut and dry to say that Ukrainians should be forced to fight and die in a war that they do not want to fight.

This entire war would have been avoided if Russia saw it this way, but they didn’t and it’s the reality that Ukrainians are in.
