Kendrick is just one of the rare artists where I remember exactly what I was doing and where I was for when his albums dropped. Deeply special. Top 5 dead or alive at this point he’s earned it

Imo you hear the DNA of that record on just about every wave to come after it. Definitely more of a ripple than something like TPAB made in terms of popular music.

The kids who care enough about music to even dig a little bit absolutely revere it. The majority of my students though? No shot. I have never felt more disconnected with what my kids are listening to or watching than the past 2 years. They were complaining about the music that gets played at the school dances so I made them make a playlist as a class. Here it is:

That’s funny—totally totally different from the rap my students are listening to

 

I can appreciate the bloat coming from him! Compared to other rap albums that end up feeling more like compilations or playlists, at least he’s filling out the tracklist with songs that fit the vision as opposed to just maxing out for streaming.

yeah this is kinda what I mean. Incredible record, but also easily digestible for someone younger and/or new to rap

That’s fair, when it dropped we really weren’t seeing the glut of those albums. Something like GKMC is absolutely a breath of fresh air compared to them. I’m just saying taken on its own

I asked my kids Monday who listened to Kendrick. Out of my three classes (60ish kids, two 10th grade and one mixed elective) there were two lol. Then other kids who I had taught previously (probably 10?) stopped by to talk about it. Those kids are the hip hop heads though, not the majority

 

Not Like Us played at every dance though. There’s a handful of Drake stans fighting the good fight. Most of the kids didn’t care about the beef, they just liked the song

Are you saying Some Rap Songs had a bigger stylistic impact on hip-hop than To Pimp a Butterfly? I love the record and I'm not exactly challenging the notion, just curious

 

Just listened to GKMC and it is a classic.
