Father John Misty - Mahashmashana (November 22nd, 2024) Album • Page 10

  1. for posterity, lol. the freakout is worth a watch. the interview is a little standoffish iirc, but yeah, I think the period right before and during Pure Comedy really turned some people off. Seems like he may have been humbled about the reception to Pure Comedy, because he jokes about it on-stage all the time.

He is one of the most wrongfully maligned artists of the last 15 years

  3. Yup - music journalists want artists to be themselves in interviews and then they criticize them when they are and that’s why most big publication interviews suck now

Didn’t even see or read that stuff before haha. I meant that I can’t stand to listen to FTJ for a full LP because it’s too verbose.

The confounding thing is that’s also what I love about the ten or so all time classics he’s released.

Pure comedy is the only album that stretches into “alright cmon this is a bit much” territory but that’s also very much the point. All his other albums are easily digestible for me, but I’m also a huge fan so that’s probably bias speaking

literally nothing to dislike about him for nearly a decade now. nakedly honest songwriting and has mostly avoided all forms of interview and being a public figure until, like, two months ago lol. just goofy to still hang onto schtick from the obama era

My favorite FJM being hated for no reason at all moment was when everyone for some reason convinced themselves Norman Fucking Rockwell (the song) was about him? And then like 2 years later Lana and him put out multiple collaborations.

I had one friend specifically who kept telling me I hate that man he's a piece of shit, but could not tell me one single thing he did. So bizarre

  12. Lana's collabs with him are always so good.

Okay this might be my second favorite now. Just an absolutely amazing work of art.

  17. I adore Honeybear, but I do think that next to GFC, this is some of his strongest and most mature, well-rounded songwriting. It really does feel career-spanning both in that sense and in style

honeybear has the best production and the most fun songs imo but his songwriting has only grown

Don't love much of this outside of the title track, maybe it'll grow. Couple tracks I did not like at all.

I really like this but man I can’t stand “I Guess Time Makes Fools of Us All”….sounds way too much like an intro to some HBO show in the aughts.
