You should definitely give God's Favorite Customer a spin. One of his best and probably the closest in DNA to this one.

 

If you didn’t like Pure Comedy, GFC is perfect for you. It’s basically a reaction album to how his marriage fell apart while making Pure Comedy.

"Jason Isbell's here as well, and he seemed a little worried about you" into the chorus still gets me giddy after all these years

 

Cut 3-4 songs for a nice 10 track album and PC dukes it out with ILYHB as his best

 

It certainly has some of his best songs. The one-two punch of the closing tracks is insane.

 

the title track of GFC is probably his best song

 

My record is supposed to arrive today, excited to actually be able to have my first listen be on vinyl, this night just got more exciting!

 

This album is Tillman making the perfect version of Pure Comedy

a lot of the lyrical themes of this one remind me a lot of Pure Comedy - it's just he did it the right way this time and didn't make it an hour and a half long lol

 

Ok fine Honeybear has good songs on it. True Affection is great

 

I hear moments from his full discography across this thing, but honestly, Pure Comedy least so. More like a combination of Fear Fun and GFC

 

yeah I agree it sounds like those albums most musically - I think that's a fair assessment that portions from everything is on this thing

 

and yeah the vibes of that pitchfork review are weird haha

 

Ok that was the most that I've liked a listen of any of his albums, but I still find a lot of it overwritten and a bit boring. I'm gonna do God's Favorite Customer now. I gotta say I just don't really love his voice.

Curious to hear your thoughts. I feel like Honeybear is pretty diverse, and tbh, this album is like eight long songs with some ballads thrown in and the overwriting isn't going anywhere lol. If you don't like that or his voice, I don't think this one will change your mind. But who knows! GFC rocks.

 

"Being You" is SO Mac DeMarco-coded. And "Josh Tillman and the Accidental Dose" is basically Leonard Cohen fronting The Beatles, lol.

 

I am already warming up to it a bit on GFC. This is pretty good

 

I've always liked that the chord progression for "Mr. Tillman" is basically a Nirvana song, but slowed down and softer

 

"Summer's Gone" is literally the perfect amount of that Chloe sound to close out this record. Gorgeous track, and the Fear Fun reference is lovely.
