Real talk for any parents in here, this is actually a great book for teaching kids about social constructs.

I'd put it right up there with Killer Underwear Invasion! for teaching kids about fake news, disinformation, and conspiracy theories, and Facts vs. Opinions vs. Robots which is about exactly what it sounds like.

I'm not fully up-to-date on RFK Jr.'s specific arguments and views, but everyone I know who talks about reducing HFCS in our food supply talks about it from the standpoint that it's incredibly cheap to produce (thanks in no small part to large government subsidies for corn) and forcing companies to use a more expensive sweetener could cause them to reduce the amount they use and/or decrease the packaging sizes so there is less sugar being consumed.

There are also specific negative health effects of Red 40 that would not be present if natural coloring were used.

Plus those "healthy" and "natural" versions of the products are definitely more expensive than the other versions, if only because you get less of the stuff in the package.

I think I get what he's trying to say - "scientific" sounding ingredients aren't necessarily inherently bad - but the reason the food is easy to eat lots of, calorie dense, non-satiating, and extremely cheap is precisely because of the ingredients used.

 

In similar news, I am announcing that I will be removing all restrictions on my purchase of vinyl records from mid-2000s emo/pop-punk bands.

 

It has been a little weird to see people arguing that there aren’t major health issues with processed foods. Like I get that what RFK is going to do will not address the actual really bad parts and it’s worth pointing that out because he’s probably going to take out the good and needed processing, but I’ve been seeing it go a little too far and not acknowledge the actual major problems
