Is there any bright spot, any sign of hope for our future? I feel so fucking defeated this morning.

This is something I have been struggling with for a while.

I grew up hearing about this idea of America. It’s the opposite of what I see America as today. I was taught that America was about never leaving anyone behind, doing what’s right even if there’s no benefit to yourself, seeing everyone as American regardless of who they are, and standing up for anyone who’s suffering.

As a kid, I idolized this vision; it framed what I wanted to be and what I wanted to see in the world around me (mostly my town, but still). Watching and reading about the sacrifices made in WWII impressed this even more deeply into me. I thought it was what everyone wanted to strive for. But for a long time, I’ve noticed that this isn’t the case—that this image of being American has been eroded, if it even existed at all.

Still, I can’t give it up. Even if I can’t find it in modern America, it’s an idea that’s been fundamental to who I’ve aspired to be and who I’ve wanted my loved ones to be. I’m honestly afraid that if I lose that belief, I’ll lose a part of myself that I don’t want to experience being that empty.

The last time Trump won the Democratic platform did get more progressive. I guess hopefully they get new leadership and get bold.

Tell that to the immigrants in the glorious, beautiful concentration camps Trump will build. Oh, and Trump will absolutely delight in enabling genocide wherever he pleases.

There really isn't. It can't be said enough how damaging Trump appointing two more SCOTUS justices and having control of the bureaucracy for the next 4 is going to be for far beyond the next 4 years. The Antivax RFK alone is going to spread so much disease amongst our children.....it's fucked man.

If you’re waiting for people to save you, IE the Democratic Party, then no there’s no hope. I think that’s retroactively apparent since Obama’s first term tbh, but should be obvious by now. Your hope needs to come from the work you do with others, not outsourcing your political agency to powerful people representing a class interest that is not yours. That is a fantasy.

You mean liberals will care about kids in cages again? Honestly the downplaying of genocide and comparing it to what people in this country are facing is not a great way to respond. The way the campaign snubbed their nose at protesters was really really gross and they deserve to be hit for this one. Just let people vent

I am interested to see how he does with his pledge to end the war in Ukraine before he starts in office.

A thought I’ve had recently is that when my members sit across the table to bargain with their employers for a Union contract, more often than not everyone on the Boss’s side of the table trying to ratfuck our side is a nice loyal little liberal (i know because i can look up their donation history). Simply put, we don’t belong in the same political party! The dynamics at play should make it that our political project is one in which those types of middle managers wouldn’t be caught dead in.

By making this election about suburban voters and “moderate republicans”, the Harris campaign turned it into a choice for the people with the least at stake materially to choose between Feeling Like Your Country Isn’t Gross VS. Cheaper Big Mac. And guess what! They voted on the basis of their class interests! Cheap Big Mac won! Dumbfucks!

I certainly got into more progressive thoughts during Trump’s first term. It’s the only place my disappointment and anger felt proactive.

There needs to be a push in this country for the left to join the Green Party enmasse, take it over, kick the old Jill Stein guard out, refocus it into state and local politics, and rebuild it into the actual viable progressive party we want to see in this country. Infrastructure is already there, I say we use it.

Agree. I just believe there are varying degrees of horrible. Kamala is horrible. Trump will be even worse. Oh well, at least new jobs will be created at the camps.

My guess is he gets laughed at by both Zelensky and Putin. The apparent “plans” don’t sound like either will really bite.

What you just stated is almost exactly how I was raised. It wasn't until I became a lifelong student of leadership when I realized that leadership isn't about convincing people with an idea or a plan (aka politicians). Leadership is about inspiring others based on what you believe and why you do what you do. You will absolutely lose part of yourself if you lose that belief. Great news is, you don't have to.
