I get that but if he got credited with the half sack already, tallying a hit on top of that would be superfluous. Hits an hurries are supposed to help illustrate how disruptive a pass rusher is being even when they don’t get the sack. They’re more about affecting throws - which strategy wise is best when you’re trying to disrupt downfield plays that your secondary has a hard time stopping - than getting the offense in a worse down and distance scenario, which strategy wise is best when you want to discourage simple runs and underneath throws. Accordingly, there are defensive plays called with the intent of getting an aggressive sack and there are defensive plays called with the intent of pressuring the QB but keeping the pocket contained first and foremost. So I understand why they are tallied separately because they do illustrate different things even though they are closely related.

I’d imagine if the result of the play is a sack, no one gets a hit or a hurry because it’s already the full sack and the pressure is accounted for. Not saying that can’t also be flawed, no stat is perfect. Of course sometimes individual sacks are lucky because they happened to be in the right spot when a QB was flushed out by another defender actually creating the pressure.

I’m not interested in arguing about sacks, hurries, hits, pressures, or whatever. I was just humorously pointing out somebody saying this offensive tackle has supposedly not given up any hits or sacks, but as it turns out, if you watch the games, you’ll see that he did, in fact, give up a hit and a sack in one play

 

It reminds me of how PFF loves to continuously push the whole “Lane Johnson hasn’t given up a sack” argument when he gave one up on week one. Then all the Eagles fans get all up in a tizzy because it was a broken play and PFF excused it, except the play still counted in reality! He gave up a sack!

 

I wish discussions weren’t so easily interpreted as arguments. Promise I wasn’t trying to start anything with that post.

 

I presented both sides of it - why it makes sense to tally it that way, but also why that can miss out on key context in the game. A lot of times this is why certain stats are tallied differently by different organizations and end up with different numbers, there’s benefits and blind spots to every “angle” of looking at the stats a lot of the time.
