It all mattered, and I'd argue it mattered more because instead of being about some fantastical road where you randomly get your wish, it's the product of a mother's desire to bond with her son and a kid with power so vast and incomprehensible he can use it without even realizing it. He's dangerous and needs help, and Agatha is in a position to give it and possibly reclaim a part of herself that she lost.

Edit: Beyond that, everything still happened, so the fact that the Road wasn't real changes nothing for anyone involved, so what was actually lost?

I thought this ending was perfect. I wouldn't change anything

Also, so fucking cool to have a show that starts off focused on one main character just to have the twist that it's truly the origin story of another

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I mean nothing on the Road really mattered because the prize was a lie and none of the others had anything to gain, except Jan who incredibly conveniently could've got her power back in half a minute the whole time apparently. the others all got gaslit into sacrificing their lives for no reason. y'all don't think it very slightly undercuts the end of that beautiful Lilia episode that the whole premise of her sacrificing herself so the others could continue on the Road was false?

on top of pretty much every supporting character getting shafted, they flip flopped between Teen and Agatha loving and hating each other so often that I'm totally at a loss whether either of them had any character growth, so I'm not really sure what the point of any of this was except to set up Tommy as the Marvel Tease for another project. I feel very unsatisfied and unimpressed basically lmao

But everyone did get what they needed from the road. Alice found purpose in her life as a protection witch and found out what happened to her mother, Lilia got to be part of a coven again as well as saving them, and Jen freed herself. They obviously should still be alive, but all three did find peace on the road

This. I think the tragic thing about this is that yes, they did actually get what they needed, but they also didn't make it to the end of the road, which means they were killed by an internal logic Billy arbitrarily made up. It's a very heavy, heavy thing that I think adds even more weight to their sacrifice. It changes nothing about the meaning or intention of their actions, just adds a darker context.

As for this, I don't think this is true at all. Billy always believed in Agatha and Agatha always had a soft spot for Billy. That much is true and reflected by their words and actions, but you have to understand Billy is a troubled teen and Agatha is a wounded person. So sometimes they cover up their true feelings and put up a front.

The growth for Agatha is being able to reveal that vulnerable side of her, the true nature of who she is. I feel like moving forward we're going to see a warmer, although no less abrasive, Agatha who accepts the role of mentor. We've gone from her cursing Wanda to helping her son. I'd call that emotional progress.

As for Billy, he didn't realize the full magnitude of how out of control his powers were. So we go from childish arrogance where he dismisses Agatha's assistance ("I don’t need you, I don't know if I ever did") to readily accepting her as a guide because he has these reality-warping powers that are bigger than he can handle.

But I'm curious, since this ending dissatisfied you, what were you hoping for an ending?

Just finished the last episode. Ehhhhh it was an okay marvel disney show. Pretty much in the middle of the road for me. I didn't think it was great, but I didn't think it was awful. Didn't care for much of the characters except for Billy and Lady Death. I got more annoyed with Agatha with every episode and the other witches were okay background characters I suppose, with highlights then and there. I am interested in seeing more of Billy and whatever happens with the young avengers.

    Overall I'd give this show a 6/10.

I would’ve loved like, 10 minutes of some additional Agatha+Rio back story pre-pregnancy but otherwise I loved this top to bottom. Sasheer gave such a beautiful performance in episode 8

Aubrey Plaza and Kathryn Hahn were crackling in all of their scenes together. It would’ve been nice to have even just them meeting for the first time or something. Felt like they left some of it on the table

Might be my favourite post Endgame show or film. Loved every second of it.

And now I have the post Marvel show/film sadness. Haven’t had that for about 5 years haha

I guess just something that made me feel like the stuff on the Road actually... mattered? maybe I'm too focused on things affecting the ending, I don't know, but as it is I feel like they could have just wandered around in circles for five episodes in the middle and we still would have ended up in the same place? that and maybe some sort of concrete growth or sign that Agatha has changed (sure it seems like she's helping Billy at the end, but they pulled that card so many times during the show and then undercut it that it's just hard to actually buy in for me). and maybe find a better way to bring Agatha back than just "I'm a ghost now", cos I think the effects look awful and the handwavey nature of it is really confusing - why did she come back and Sharon/Lilia/Alice don't get to be ghosts?

it just strikes me as silly that they put in all this work into making these supporting characters likable, and had them sacrifice themselves to save the others in really emotional ways, then turned around at the end and said "yeah well none of that needed to happen because Agatha gets a free death pass and Billy was controlling the whole thing". just a weird and confusing storytelling decision imo

I don't have time right now to dissect this, but I thought they were pretty clear about why Agatha is a ghost: she can't move on because she doesn't want to face her son after she perverted their song to keep killing witches.

The others unfortunately don't have that kind of baggage, so they don't have a reason to stay. It's a pretty classic ghost archetype.

She also told Rio she didn’t want to see her. So Death wasn’t there to escort her soul to the afterlife.

I don’t understand why people always need the villain to change or be redeemed. She’s a serial killer con artist. Unless they went a similar direction as the Harley Quinn series, I’m completely uninterested in an Agatha who makes good choices and always does the right thing. The tension of the show, albeit to some degree in hindsight, is that she was forced to work as part of a coven for the first time as her only option.

I agree with this. Based off one of Schaeffer's interviews, it sounded like they wanted to have scenes pre-Nicky but they couldn't make it work, I'm assuming budget and time wise.
