What a birthday gift!

 

Damn, this makes me want to check out Haunted Trail lol

 

VHS Beyond was good! About on par with 85 for me, which I already want to rewatch. The first segment was literally so sick that I didn't even care that it was a little corny lol. Second segment genuinely freaked me out, as did Justin Long's (can't believe he essentially remade Tusk for this lmao). Some digital effects in the skydiving segment I didn't love, but even the wraparound segment felt pretty inspired.

this one, not this one lolol
using this as my foreign woman director pick for gore-us. a group of deeply religious young women roam the streets at night to beat up anyone they deem sinful. at least, that's where the movie starts, anyway. more of a dramedy/satire, nothing "scary" really happens (or rather, living under such a repressed society is the scary part). kind of a meandering mess, didn't hook me right away, but I'm glad I stuck with it. there's a pivotal reveal in the final third that really changed how i felt about it (maybe don't watch the trailer). lots of compelling stylized shots, playful use of color, a pop-filled soundtrack that's never overbearing, good performances by the two leads.

man, Terrifier 3 was fucking amazing. I never would have expected to love that series so much after the first one.
