One of the reason the flooding was also so bad is because in the many of the towns that people live in the mountains there, the towns are basically bowls with the mountains and hills surrounding them so it just funnels water.

If someone hasn't heard what’s going on there by now, they clearly just don’t follow the news in like any capacity lol. It’s weird seeing people online acting like the media is ignoring it. I’ve seen plenty of coverage of it.

I’ve wanted to visit Asheville, it seems like a cool place to go. My sister lives in NC (Raleigh area so luckily everything is fine there) but last time I went down to visit her we went for a hike in western NC so I recognize driving through some towns while we were out there that got hit pretty bad like Boone and Chimney Rock. Rough just thinking about how those areas have been changed forever.

Gotta say, I’d sort of put my existential climate dread on hold in place of existential imperialism dread but it sure has made a comeback recently

yeah, that has been my experience as well - I am seeing it covered all over. they were both blown away by what I was saying though, and I could tell they kinda thought I was exaggerating until I found them a bunch of videos and stuff online

My wife is from Western NC, about 45 miles southeast of Asheville right near the SC border, and she's been following all of it pretty closely since she knows a lot of people who still live in the area. My in-laws live down there, but they've been out of town and all reports are that their place is thankfully fine, but without power. Not sure how the roads are for them to get to the house either when they return.

Yes, fire at a chemical lab (yesterday) south east of Atlanta. I drove through it this morning not knowing about it and wondered why it was so hazy and foggy. Apparently the downtown has gotten the chlorine smell but the shelter in place / evacuation hasn't effected the city yet. I'll be interested to see the impact as I drive home. Crazy / scary stuff and I hope the impact to health / safety is minimal.

My nephew is supposed to be getting married in mid-Oct in Leicester, right outside Asheville. Beyond relieved that my family there is okay, and my heart breaks for them. Never would've thought that area would see such significant flooding like this.

Also if Kamala wins and governs like she’s running she will be deeply unpopular for reasons both legit and probably not-legit, and considering she’s never won a presidential primary I wouldn’t pencil her in for 2028
