It's hard to judge method because you have a range from Daniel Day-Lewis to Jared Leto. Getting inside the mental state of your character is helpful but a lot of times the situations your character is in is going to be too hard to replicate accurately.

I forget which movie it was, but Stanley Kubrick required all of the cabinets and shelves in a hospital scene to be accurately stocked like a real hospital, even though the characters did not touch or interact with them. A lot of that just feels unnecessary but at the same time I didn't bring Daniel Plainview to life or make 2001: A Space Odyssey so what do I know?

 

I think those types of things are for the actors and not the audience

 

To be fair, Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors of all time and doesn’t have rumors about sending other cast members weird shit because he was in character.

DDL also, as far as we know, isn’t a creepy weird piece of shit.

 

Stuff like DiCaprio roughing it out for The Revenant doesn't even make that much sense because the difference between you and the character is that they were in real danger while you have a hotel and food waiting for you whenever you decide it gets too difficult.
