Apologies to @Jason Tate who called the incompetence of a Harris campaign far before she took over, you were right this is horrible

I don’t think a Harris loss is guaranteed but maybe she’d be doing better against Trump if she wasn’t also running as a republican.

I was talking to a woman at the bar yesterday and she said she got a letter from her kids school that they were putting litter boxes in the bathrooms for kids identifying as cats. I said “no you didn’t, that’s not true” and she said well she didn’t get a letter but heard about it. And I said it’s just not true and she said yeah maybe not lol How the hell is this still a thing that people go around saying?

People at work still sometimes talk about that.

The other day at work when people were talking about Venezuelan gangs taking over the country, someone said something like “I really need to watch the news more, I didn’t know about any of this!” and the woman who initially brought it up said, “you have to follow a bunch of different sources since the media doesn’t really report the news anymore but it’s a sick world out there.” There’s no fighting back against this because you know the obvious “your news is fake news” rebuttal and it’s really scary and depressing and makes me want to not be here.

As I’ve been saying…”the discourse” that used to just be shitting around in the intent and would only occasionally penetrate to normies is now everywhere all the time. Why is candidate x saying *insert rhetoric here*? Probably because millions of voters now believe something totally insane and/or stupid and unfortunately the research seems to show that trying to show these people why what they believe is insane and stupid doesn’t seem to work and makes them dig in deeper.

Luckily, human beings are only getting smarter and there haven’t been any diseases or illnesses out there lately that are highly contagious and shown to shrink grey matter in the brain even in the mildest of infections, so eventually we’ll grow out of this phase.

No, it’s a new movie on Netflix directed by Jeremy Saulnier about a bunch of corrupt cops in a small town getting their asses beat! Highly
    Recommend.

I think you just have to ignore the stupid shit. Someone buying into the idea of litter boxes in schools and Venezuelan gangs taking Colorado is not someone you need to have an argument with. You just need to present a different vision of the world for people to buy into. But to do that, you have to give people something to actually sink their teeth in. And we’re at a stage in our empire where both parties are steadfast committed to not doing that. We preside over the State, but you’re an idiot if you expect us to actually help you - you will allow us to never have to do that. That’s what Clinton in 2016 failed at, and it’s possible the same movie is playing out here. There is nothing about the Harris campaign that is inspiring or actually encouraging to anyone who wasn’t already going to be a voter for her. If “child tax credits” and “dangerous Donald” are your entire platform, who do you think is getting amped for that? It’s natural that part of the space where actual material conditions used to be addressed gets filled with nonsense conspiracy shit (QAnon, made up shit about migrants, “Mueller She Wrote”, etc.).

So it goes to the Matt Christman point about 21st Century American politics: it isn’t about delivering anything or improving material conditions, it’s about punishing your enemies. For conservatives, owning the libs is about taking away policies they like and making changes that don’t necessarily benefit you, but poke liberals in the eye. For liberals, it’s about driving MAGA insane and laughing.

It’s really frustrating that there are so many things for working class folks to be outraged about but the dems offer nothing but Trump bad so they latch onto these ridiculous things that give them something to blame I guess. If the dems ran their campaign like Bernie and actually spoke to things that are tangible to be outraged about I really think it would go a long way to get people to pay attention to things that matter

Yeah, I agree. You’d have plenty of crazy shit people still chose to believe, but if your party’s first and foremost message is “we’ll make your life better in X Y and Z tangible ways” that can go a long way to bringing people over, and from there you can build solidarity (something Bernie did a good job with articulating in 2020). But, the problem is that I think the Dems vision of power is not one where they have to use that power to be accountable to the people who elected them.

I’m still not ready to say I think Trump will win, but I really did not expect Kamala to run as vacuous of a campaign as the 2016 Clinton campaign did. I thought there’d be lip service to a bolder vision for her administration.
