The thing with moving your policy is that in general is how much of an impact does it truly have on people's decision to vote for that particular candidate. We see this is all the time in polling showing Americans approving all sorts of things in high numbers that one or both parties don't have as their policy yet they still vote for the candidate of that party. For example, Republicans/Independents approve expanding Medicare at above or around 60% but the Republican party does not and will not have it as their policy. This gets into that normie voting discussion that has been done quite a few times in this thread.

That's why my brilliant idea is "Lie and use rhetoric that makes you sound more moderate on the issue but then when you actually get elected just don't prioritize that issue or do something really watered down" lol. Basically what the Republicans do every election when they pretend they're actually mainstream moderate views but they're actually right wing sickos. Dems should do it too.

I would say that addressing immigration at this point requires in part addressing the reason for mass migration, IE climate change and American imperialism. These are things that the Democrats are not willing to seriously address. So now that we are where we are, they will of course take the punitive approach to migrants as opposed to the wholistic one. If the Democrats - and the propaganda organs that function alongside them - had spent the past X many years building a counter-narrative out of the truth of the matter (that immigrants are not actually causing genuine issues for Americans; that their appearance at the border is due to systemic reasons that we can help address, etc.) then the number of Americans stating that the border is a major concern would be lower. Ceding that ground to Trump and accepting the Republican framework on this issue is both horrific policy and also pretty bad politics.

In 2016, “not caring about immigrants” was a cudgel liberals used against the left who they felt jeopardized Clinton’s campaign. Today, it’s “not caring about the LGBTQ community.” So if the Dems carry on in this direction, there’s no reason to believe we are 4-8 years from them being thrown under the bus as well.

EDIT: found the Hasan/Ettingermentum vid that spoke on this a few months ago. It’ll address this all pretty clearly:

To the bolded, this is something the Obama admin talked about a lot and Dems kept talking about during Trump, AND the whole reason why Biden sent Harris as his "immigration czar" to central American countries to talk about solutions and etc. Like, the whole idea of getting to the root of the "problem" was a big talking point during the Obama years and he got savaged by right wing media any time he brought it up, especially climate change. But the years of doing that didn't seem to make much of a difference once the numbers at the border began to swell to new highs and the immigration system couldn't handle them. As soon as the right wing was able to spin up the border invasion fear machine, a lot of the progress in attitudes was (temporarily IMO) lost, to the point where a majority of AMericans want to curb immigration for the first time since 2001. If that polling is correct, then I would say at least miming that you'll "fix the immigration system" and be "Tougher on illegal crossings" and blah blah isn't "pretty bad politics". Bad policy, yes, but that's why I say---just lie about what you'll do to win and then once you win do something else lol

Actually just looked it up, and if you look at this polling, to me it DOES indeed seem like changing the rhetoric and the way we talked about immigration and the root causes for it and how to address them and etc was working...until the border got overwhelemed and people immediately reverted back to fuck it.
Sharply More Americans Want to Curb Immigration to U.S.

I really do think Trump getting elected did irreversable damage to so many issues because it suddenly became a level 5 emergency on every issue just to get him the fuck out that it has made it hard to focus on specific issues while at the same time draining the capacity of people to care about multiple issues and the nuances behind them at once.

Edit-ANd I fully believe a big part of that regression has been the dishonest framing of the numbers, i.e. evry Republican and right wing chud like Musk repeatedly saying "10 million people have come in since Biden got elected!" or whatever which is actually just the 10 million encounters at the border and the large majority of those people get immediately deported, but there are definitely a lot of people out there who have seen that number and rhetoric and fully believe 10 million immigrants have come into the country in 3 years. Just insanity and stupidity.

Idk, I’m pretty plugged into politics and pay attention to it because of work, and I don’t think I’ve seen much of a push at all on those topics. I didn’t even know about Kamala being border czar (much less what that is) because of Trump making fun of it. And I was not only plugged in, but actually a fan of Obama for much of his term until my politics started to shift, and aside from rhetoric about how “we’re going to fix our broken immigration system” there certainly wasn’t any meaningful push about the systemic reasons (mostly because his Secretary of State/he himself was actively contributing to them).

As for “run moderate and then govern differently” okay sure that sounds like fun but the Dems have almost always governed to the right of what they ran on so best of luck.
