Sorry to spoil your fun? It’s a totally worthy topic of discussion about one of the major releases of the year, and Matt had some interesting insights as an industry person that I’m glad came up in here.

I feel like there are users on this website who are averse to any topic of conversation about an album other than “I like this!” or “Omg! [insert song title] is a banger!” and I do not get it at all. You’re on a music forum built for discussing music, and any topic related to this album is fair game. Including chart performance!

The sweet release of her finally saying “I’m so fucking horny” after 10 songs is one of the best music moments of 2024.

Highlighted the part that I am just not so sure about. It seems that people in these threads are letting the chart performance and marketing strategy be a bigger part of whether an album is a "success" or not instead of, I dunno, the songs?

Maybe it's just whiplash compared to being in threads like the one for the Foxing album where absolutely no one cares about a chart, and surprise! the conversation is good. Charts are also totally broken, and at this point are just a game that the biggest artists in the world cheat at so they can pat themselves on the back for being good at cheating. The entire discourse around Dua Lipa's album was around it being a "flop" because it didn't sell as well as the armchair QBs who had better marketing strategies than her team thought it should sell, which somehow means the album isn't good?

I'm not someone with my ear to the ground to stuff that charts, and I just pop in on this stuff from time to time, so I know my opinion is far from the authority, just my observations.

This moment at her concert is going to be so good. Good luck to any parents bringing little kids.

I want to see those interviews like the ones where parents are interviewed after taking their kids to see Alien in theaters.

wow, didn’t realize she was a kids star as well. granted, I guess it’s the same vein as like Taylor/Olivia, both of them had muchhhh younger crowds live than I was anticipating.

What a flop. Career's over. She will never work in this town again!

Respectfully to Foxing, no one talks about it because there’s next to no chance of them ever topping the charts. And that’s fine! That’s not really their goal. But with these massive pop albums, the calculus of charting absolutely impacts the music that gets made and how that music enters the world. And it can have a huge impact on the ebbs and flows of an artist’s career, too. Broken or not, charts matter in pop music, and Sabrina Carpenter is a pop artist.

Re: Dua, I don’t think that album is necessarily a “flop,” and I don’t think its commercial performance has any bearing on its quality (it’s an album I like, and has been all along) but it absolutely underperformed relative to her previous album, and I’m personally interested to see what that means for her career going forward. In that case as in this one, totally worth talking about.

I also don’t think talking about charts means you can’t also “talk about the music.” Those conversations have absolutely happened in this thread, too; I incited the biggest one!

Talking about charting this much just tells me you have nothing of value to add to a conversation about the album itself lol

you’ve done nothing but nitpick weird little things about this over the past few days and now are going on a chart tirade to make that the focal point of all of the discussion. Truly baffling.

    Anyways, album is pretty good!

you can talk about sales in an album thread but when it's the only stuff you're talking about regarding the album at all and the tone of the conversation seems to more than imply that the sales of the record is a reflection of its quality, that is more than just a little weird
