I think what wharf said still applies a lot here in terms of it wasn’t the pension that sucks, it was all the other rules and laws around it haha. I do get not being able to roll over your growth if you leave but i think the original tweets point was even with a drawback like that, the trade off is the longevity of it

 

he basically dropped a line about needing to reform zoning laws that make it harder to build more units. yimby Twitter basically creamed themselves over the use of “units”
instead of “homes”, one guy made a joke about how he’s clearly deep in it for calling them units instead of homes lol

 

But yeah “nimby” definitely used to be something you heard more about energy projects I feel like, oil/gas/nuclear/etc. feels like only in recent years did nimby and yimby transfer over to housing

 

think it depends on what’s being proposed to go into whose backyard. NIMBY used to be, like, what you’d call folks who had “don’t build that community center or that affordable housing near me because i don’t like the element it brings to my neighborhood” attitude, IE racists. Feel like YIMBYism was a self-identifying response to that but a lot of YIMBY types are not discerning and feel like building anything is inherently good, which results in them supporting (often unintentionally or at least without labeling it as) gentrification. You often see those types then turn around and refer to people who might feel like building new developments in their neighborhood is a negative for legitimate reasons “NIMBYs”, which significantly alters the term from its initial meaning and is often cynically used to try and shut down dissent.

Speaking of Yimby/Nimby stuff: The big FL news this week is DeSantis announced an initiative that would clear out land in state parks for golf courses, pickleball courts, and disc golf. They had the gall to call it "The Great Outdoors Initiative" people are pissed.
