Hamas is the elected govt of the Gaza Strip, a political party, a national resistance movement, and like many political parties and resistance movements under colonialism have an armed wing, called the Al-Qassam brigades. They should be armed as organized colonized and oppressed people, as is their right and their right to attack israel, the colonizer and oppressor, as is the right of all colonized and occupied people. This is also their right by international law, which they cite themselves as justification. They also run medical services, sanitation, tourism, etc. They were birthed out of the 1st intifada also called the Stone Intifada by former Muslim Brotherhood members who were on the fence about actual militant resistance. Prior to this they provided Islamic charity services not unlike Christian charities, though providing social services would continue with Hamas. This reputation would help them win in an election they were also on the fence about joining. In the 2006 election they thought they’d join the parliament as the opposition against Fatah, but ended up winning. I say all this to give context and to say, these are not people who “want war” or don’t care about the lives of Palestinians. Of course they wish the destruction of israel which is good. It should be destroyed. But in being the govt they’ve also had to moderate their stance for the purpose of practicality to accept two states, though still wanting all of Palestine which is their right. These aren’t “radicals” or radical in any pejorative sense. If anything, radical in the positive sense.

Have you asked yourself, why did they attack? Like did you look it up? Honest question.

They attacked and took hostages because Gaza has been under siege ever since they’ve taken power by air, sea, and land. The people are being slowly suffocated and when they’re not israel “mows the lawn” like in Operation Cast Lead or Protective Edge causing massive infrastructural damage to a region blockaded and embargoed from sufficient building material among other vital necessities. Their people from Gaza and the West Bank also languish in israeli dungeons, many resistance fighters—freedom fighters, and many just people. Arab counties around them are in normalizing processes with israel leaving the Palestinians, fellow Arabs forgotten. They didn’t “bait.” They don’t “want war.” They don’t want to be forgotten! They want an end to the siege. They want their hostages released. They want the protection that only a state can provide. And if their is a ceasefire and the the colonization of Palestine and Palestinians continue, then yes they or someone will attach again, because they are only defending Palestine and Palestinians.
