Here you go again lol, taking an opinion I've formed from actually taking data science classes, that had me read peer acclaimed research on how human cognitive habits lead us to form flawed conclusions from data, and thinking it's just word salad

let's just not. If it happens in actual fields of science, it certainly happens in football stats analysis - yes, even among professionals.

 

All I'm gonna say is there's a legit reason I have that opinion, it is a consistent opinion I've shared that you just don't like, and I'm not "just arguing with everything ever"

 

It's more like I'm trusting in the dozens of people with advanced degrees in your field who are saying the opposite thing you are. Also just because flawed conclusions can be drawn does not mean you should just outright reject all conclusions

I get what you're saying, but it's also kinda no consequences in that field if your data conclusions don't match reality. So there's a lot of ego, a lot of "well MY model's perfect and DOES account for everything". And I'm telling you that exists in actual data science teams with people who have decades of experience, not even just talking about football and sports and dumb stuff like that.

 

Yes that exists. Until I'm given an actual reason to just throw it all out though...

 

I think the fact that bad players sometimes have good stats and good players sometimes have bad PFF ratings is enough reason for me to be at least skeptical. No one said "throw it all out" but I am saying it's treated as objective when it isn't. It's a crowd-sourced, educated opinion but it is still to some degree subjective and fallible.

 

The simplest way I could describe it is like, in math, each individual equation is objective. But the way you combine multiple different equations to solve a word problem, requires different kinds of reasoning than the math itself. And that's where human error can easily take objective numbers and interpret them to say the wrong thing. That exists, too, when you try to quantify real life things, whether we're talking about which defender to blame for an arbitrarily-defined "successful play" in football, or whether we're talking about like, how human bodies react to a new medication.

this is why it's fundamental in research to do it with the purpose of disproving your hypothesis. You have to look for any reason why your preliminary assumption might not be correct, or might not be the only factor, before you can declare that as the cause-and-effect.
