I definitely got the vibe that the leftists here weren't cozy to Obama from lurking the gen pol thread but the contrast between criticisms struck me as odd. Like you mentioned though, this is in context of the presidential race so it's not really an accurate comparison. You've been around here longer so I'll take your word for what the leftists here actually think.

I think another part of it is that Obama is pretty much done at this point and the further away you get from someone's presidency, in a lot of cases, the rose tinted goggles start to come out. I've seen it start here already. I think there will be those of us that remember his poor foreign policy and bring it up when we can.

I do think there are obvious double standards when it comes to HRC and other male politicians. I don't think foreign policy is one of those. Her record is truly abhorrent and it is a deep, deep concern for a lot of people and rightly so that should not be downplayed

I only casually look at the politics forum here so I can't speak to Chorus, but irl the ppl I know are def harder on Clinton than like anyone else. I'm glad they're holding her to high standards but the standards are def higher than I know they've held past nominees to. instead of lowering their standards for her I'd rather they raise them for others but idk if that'll happen in the future.

But omg I had the worst convo with a white feminist the other day. of course there's sexism at play this election and it's awful, but she had like no nuance in her convo. saying electing a woman is the biggest hurdle we've ever faced and that yeah electing a black president was hard but a woman is even harder! no acknowledgments about intersectionality or recognizing the privileges of some groups or anything. I think it annoyed me so much cause she's a sociology professor and she should know better than to like rank oppressions and over simplify it so much. I don't remember her exact wording on things but she was out of line. she also asked who my dad was voting for and I said idk he usually votes third party and she was all "I don't think he'd ever vote for a woman" and I wanted to hit her lol. like lady back offffff. Ok rant over.

It is important for men to be very real with themselves in terms of how they choose to criticize Hillary precisely because men live in a world in which patriarchy infects every social interaction and that is important. With that said, I hate Hillary, her husband, Obama and others for similar reasons, though the original Clinton administration marked my childhood more vividly in terms of actually making my mother's life worse. The limitations of Hillary's feminism are evident and can be documented, both here and internationally. That said, I understand a vote for her and I wouldn't castigate anyone who decide to do so, because there are objective issues that relate to safety. One doesn't need me to say that these are legitimate, it should just be understood. But, we can disagree on tactics and policy when it comes to dismantling patriarchy, whilst maintaining solidarity. One can say that, despite Hillary's mobilization of so many women of color, her orientation is overwhelming towards the white feminist perspective. Which is why I think the women of color that go unnamed and un-celebrated when Hillary ascends to power are far more important. They are the people that will be giving Hillary her victory, but it isn't without the understanding that she falls short of expectations, that she may even oppose their demands, and it doesn't matter because the power lies with them. They are committed to her only insofar as she represents a mechanism by which they can advance their interests of better wages, childcare, more empowerment in their workplace; that is is to say, their demands exceed Hillary and they will, along with BLM and other groups, be there to build political alliances and networks that can transform the liberal discourse that we've put up with for quite some time to a politics that puts class structures, white supremacy, heteronormativity and patriarchy into question. So, I guess I'm with them, not her.

Just wanted to say that I lost it today (in a few different ways), but I went in a full rant to the "well, I just don't like her" response. The ingrained mysoginy in some women is still shocking to me.

I had a conversation at lunch today with two women about this. I wouldn't say they were shocked but I don't think they considered just how much internalized misogyny played a role yesterday.

  11. One of my jobs is a coffee runner for a cat cafe - involves a .5 mile walk through part of Hollywood and back a few times a day.

The street harassment has increased tenfold in the past couple of days, and has escalated to a guy in a Mercedes following me down an alley, driving ahead when I asked him what he needed and waiting for me at the end/blocking the alley before slowly driving away.

    It's great.

All these stories are making me sick to my stomach, just being an ally doesn't feel like enough but I am so sorry

I am worried cause I legit can't function without bc. it has allowed me to live normally without taking so many sick days every month. without it I'm paralyzed in bed with back and stomach pain, can't eat, can't stop puking or crying... like without bc it feels like someone has dug their hands into my body and is squeezing my insides until I die. this obv impacts my job and life so I'd enjoy not going through it again.

  25. I'm going to refill my bc prescription as many times as Kaiser will let me over the next couple of months and then hope like hell he isn't able to roll back the pre-existing conditions clause. I know he said this weekend that he won't, but he's said a lot of things and his ultra-conservative cabinet/congress may beg to differ. There's no way to know what's coming regarding healthcare and it's terrifying.
