the metro area is important to understanding St. Louis, if you go off population it’s a tiny city with under 300k population but it’s separate from St. Louis county which would easily put it over a million and most other cities don’t have the divide I think Baltimore is one of the only other major cities that’s like that

well I meant city proper which is what I should have said instead of metro area. Philly is like 75th in square mileage but top 10 in population. If you include Philly’s “metro area” the population balloons. Meanwhile Houston is like 4 times bigger than Philly square mileage wise.

Jacksonville is interesting as it’s east coast but sprawls even bigger than Houston does. But probably more to do with it being founded and built later than the rest of the east coast cities
