It’s weird to me that we have different minimum wages for tipped employees vs non-tipped.

I’ve been working as a freelancer for over three years (I work full time and I get benefits) but I went three years without a raise (my own fault for not bringing up earlier to my job recruiter). When I hit the three year mark I suggested a pay raise and they accepted my offer (10% raise), so I was happy with that

This conversation about raises is hilarious because I actually just got one today.

Except our GM calls me in her office with HR and starts by saying "I want you to know we appreciate all you've done for us..." and I got real scared.

Then she reveals what's actually happening and I relax. Pretty sure she did that just to wind me up.

this is how my company usually is (albeit more lenient) but i was absorbed into a larger team earlier this year which wasn’t technically a promotion but it was enough of a change that everyone seemed to agree i should get more money than just the usual merit raise, which is cool, it’s just taking a while to actually happen (the convo started in April and I just got the raise offer today)

I do miss how it worked at my old job: i would ask the owner for a raise and he would say yes and adjust payroll right in front of me, lol.

The job I’m at now is the first job I’ve ever had where they aren’t actively trying to pay you as humanly little as possible.

My previous boss once told me I left a lot of money on the table by not negotiating when I was hired and laughed about it. We got rote 4% raises each year which were below inflation and were told that they’re fixed and out of everyone’s hands. My boss would a freak out when other people at the company recruited me to do extra work and compensated me for it with stipends.

At my new job, my salary immediately went up like 45%, I negotiated a 5% bump, and I started making more than my old boss, doing the same work I did at my old job. At the end of my first year, they apologized that my raise was ‘only 10%’ and when I found out I was also getting a bonus I legit cried. I was always the same person and my skills were the same at both places but one environment made me feel inadequate and lucky to make what I did and the other environment made me feel like the senior employee I am and deserving of being paid well for it.

I feel very privileged and fortunate and also very angry that I never knew to advocate for myself 6 years earlier and that I let my old job make me feel like I sucked for that long. I try to convey to people to always negotiate, never take “it’s out of our hands” as concrete or truth, and, even if they say no to your requests in the end, believe in your worth as a person and honor it by advocating for yourself. Easier said than done in a lot of situations but we have more leverage than we think a lot of the time.

the problem is that for the most part servers make so much above minimum wage with the current system none of us would really prefer to get say, 20 an hour with no tips when my tip averages typically shake out to 25-30 an hour week to week (and with my new job will be closer to 35 since it’s quite upscale compared to what I’ve done before) if we got rid of tips very few if any restaurants would match what their servers what they’re making on average now

for how much people complain about tipping culture online it’s the same as it’s always been in the real world and most people are fine to tip 18-20 percent when they dine out and my money has stayed consistent throughout the years (too bad my mental health hasn’t!)

Only really way to get a big raise at my job is to force them into a game of chicken and hope they want to play by getting a offer from another company.

Pretty good speech from Biden. I'll never get over not getting to vote for Bernie or Warren, but I do have some home state pride. And hometown pride as I spent the first 5 years of my life in Claymont/still live around the area.

I just lost it at him pointing to someone and saying "he'd like to have you for dinner." I'm at a loss for words when it comes to this demented man, as usual.
