  1. At this point I've lumped the Terrifier films in with stuff like Martyrs and High Tension that I've read about but don't ever wanna see

High Tension was a film I was just old enough to see in theaters. Didn’t know much going in tho lol

Martyrs is more fucked up consistently but it has a better plot

I've seen them both once. Will probably rewatch them in October.

  7. Finally getting to some of my dvd blind buys. In the Earth is okay. Part The Watchers, part Annihilation, but not nearly as good as the latter. Takes place in the woods, has a small cast, some trippy visuals, and deals with folklore in an intriguing way. Way too many flashing lights, though. Good performance by Ellora Torchia, who also plays Connie in Midsommar, and is once again the only sensible character in the bunch. The film tries to be an examination of science vs religion in the midst of a pandemic, but doesn't really have anything actually substantial to say.

Watched In the Earth a while back and thought it was solid enough, but haven't thought about it since or anything.

  13. The Rental is also okay. Relationship drama turned airbnb home invasion. The horror elements are kinda bland but everything else is good.

Went to see Oddity last night before it left my local theater and absolutely loved it. Some of the most genuine scares I've seen in a horror film in a while.

  24. dvd blind buys pt 3: B'Twixt Now and Sunrise, a recut of Francis Ford Coppola's 2011 film.
On a book tour, our main character visits a small town with a dark past and an unsolved murder. Elle Fanning plays a young ghost who haunts the author's dreams. The daytime sequences are often kinda silly, while the dream sequences are beautiful and melancholy, almost entirely black and white with a few splashes of color. Elle's role is a bit smaller than I would've liked, but she's just stunning in this. The ending, while emotionally and thematically resonant, leaves the plot a bit unresolved and therefore rather unfulfilling. I haven't seen the original, but I read how that ended and I think that would've just annoyed me. This new version apparently cuts out about four minutes of the ending that, yes, wraps up the story a bit more, but also sounds like a cop-out to me.

Oddity was fun but kind of uneven. Should be on Shudder soonish if you can’t see it in a theatre.
