outside of obvious generational talents who get picked 1-1, no one is expecting any high schooler to reach the majors within a year or two. hell, no one expects a college player to reach the majors that quick unless they're like a ridiculous LHP like Garret Crochet who can do a relief job in a pinch or a prodigy like Skenes. teams draft either based on best player available (regardless of team positional needs or playoff contention window) or best discrepancy between slot value (allotted bonus money for that pick) and potential future value of the player (whether it be through trades or on the field)

Harper was a fast riser, he graduated high school early and played a year of JUCO ball to become draft eligible a year earlier than normal. He deserves so much credit for living up to hype considering he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16

A-Rod debuted at 18 which is absurd, was an obvious star in the making in the 1993 draft class

I feel like there's too many guys like Edmonds that have absolutely no business behind the mic. He's not well spoken. His commentary is dull. He has a dumb voice. He's an asshole. Dude is only there because he played for the Cardinals x amount of years. These former players that become "analysts" and immediately land a big gig are always terrible.

i found smoltz genuinely enjoyable when he was first starting out with the braves local broadcasts. idk what the fuck happened when he went national.

 

Noticing a pattern here, maybe it’s specifically former Cardinals (even just for two minutes like Smoltz) who are broadcasters that suck lol. Although I think AJ Pierzynski is usually fine

 

I’m just waiting for the day they announce Joe Davis has left the dodgers for the national broadcast

He was good in the Braves booth bc he didn’t take himself so seriously and wasn’t the lead guy. He would just be up there to share a story while Chip/Joe/whoever were still in control of the play by play and commentary.

FOX decided to put him on a pedestal and brand him as baseball’s version of Troy Aikman in the booth solely bc they wanted a HOFer to hold a mic during their broadcasts. Since Smoltz knows he’s on that pedestal, he won’t shut the fuck up and has to act like Mr Know It All the entire game. It’s exhausting.

 

I generally feel bad coming at a time where like half the city don’t have power lol
