If Taylor has cared more about the numbers earlier in her career I wonder where she'd be. I think she always cared but she didn't really seem to start pushing it as much until 1989 and the different Polaroids with the album, unless I'm forgetting other album release strategies. Otherwise I feel like it was just a target deluxe edition thing. I guess she did have the papa John's promotion with Red now that I'm thinking about it. But nothing else memorable stands out

I'm guessing for her it's just trying to find new records to break and heights to achieve. When you've hit all the other career milestones I guess why not have different goals or markers? I feel like I've heard other artists say they hit it big and achieved their dream and then had the spiral of "now what?" Maybe this is how Taylor keeps from avoiding that spiral? With our capitalistic society's mindset that we need to work and achieve all the time, wouldn't surprise me.

It is absolutely a meaningful milestone for young artists, especially if they’ve never gotten there before. The Gracie one is especially notable, since Taylor went out of her way to lift that release up, but it kind of came across as “you can have a big first week, but you can’t have my crown.”
