Anberlin have detailed their new album, Vega, due out August 2nd. Today they’ve shared a video for “Walk Alone.”

A formidable force in alternative rock for more than two decades, Anberlin is announcing their upcoming full length album, Vega, due August 2 via Equal Vision Records. This highly anticipated release is the first proper record since announcing the touring departure of vocalist Stephen Christian and the addition of Memphis May Fire’s Matty Mullins. The twelve-tracks, deliberately free-flowing, represent the diverse nature of Anberlin; with a handful of much heavier tracks, a dabble into industrial exploration, as well as the quintessential mellow vibes Anberlin fans have come to love over the band’s expansive career.

Constantly evolving, the members of Anberlin did not have any future plans to release new music after taking a five year hiatus, before reuniting in 2019. The pandemic was the ultimate catalyst for the writing process which resulted in two explosive EPs released in 2022 and 2023, before officially passing the torch to Mullins and finalizing Vega.

On the new chapter of Anberlin, drummer Nate Young emphasizes "With Anberlin, there’s been multiple eras of our career. This new era with Matty Mullins is one we couldn’t be more stoked on. As all things, you never know how long this time will be, but we’re sure gonna lean all the way in and enjoy the hell out of the process.”

To coincide with the album announcement, Anberlin debuted their first single off the record, “Walk Alone”, with an accompanying music video, which details the journey of a spouse or partner battling with depression. Often struggling in silence, the lyrics document how painful it can be to watch someone you love dealing with such intense emotions. Ensuring that you are never alone, the song demonstrates the compassion and care of a genuine partnership and commitment.

On the song’s sound, Anberlin’s guitarist/vocalist Christian McAlhaney adds "Walk Alone is a curious mixture of the traditional and modern Anberlin sound. The goal was to approach the vintage Anberlin sound with a more current approach to songwriting and production."

FYI not a new album - the two eps bundled together with two new songs with the new singer.

Matty song - although not offensively bad is also offensively generic. Need to go back to the eps that I don’t spend much time with back when they dropped.

So, is Stephen Christian still in the band but only for recording and not any shows? For something like WWWY where they will be playing 100% Stephen Christian songs, will Matty be the singer?

I am curious as to this as well. What a weird set up. Nothing against Matty, but his voice is seriously out of place in Anberlin and Walk Alone just isn’t it for me. Why can’t they just record and only ever tour very sporadically? I know Stephen doesn’t wanna tour any more but this configuration of the band doesn’t do it for me.

Touring departure...but this sounds like a Matty lead vocals record. Like someone said earlier, sounds generic.

I don't hate Matty's stuff but Stephen's voice was so unique and it, along with his lyricism, is a lot of what made the band for me.

Agree. Its not that they are bad with Matty, hes a fine singer and I enjoy listening to him but now they sort of blend in with other bands in the genre. With Stephen they stood out from the rest more.

Matty's only on vocals for the 2 new songs, the rest of the album is Stephen

Maybe I'm weird, but I'm actually enjoying this even if it's a bit more generic without Stephen's vocals. Looking forward to some new Anberlin.

This feels like the Real Friends transition to Codi as lead vocals. Loses some of the uniqueness, but still good songs, and I'm happier having music that we wouldn't otherwise get.

This makes no sense. They announced this Matt guy was gonna do live shows and Stephen would still do the studio songs... yet they're dropping two new songs with the new vocalist.

So, did they finally decide to kick Stephen out so they could be a real band or do they not know what they wanna do and lied to their fans?

I think they're afraid to say that Stephen is done, so this is their weird way of transitioning him out. Though is he still writing the songs?
