I am/was considering going for at least a day to Riot this year and just figuring out a way to get there/back and dealing with it, especially since I actually mostly dig the lineup and there are both acts I have never seen before I would be down to catch (Pavement, St. Vincent, Something Corporate, Basement, Sweet Pill to name a few) and others I want to see again (Waxahatchee, Slaughter Beach, Dog, Bright Eyes, Beach Bunny, Sir Chloe) to again name a few) but with Julien announcing three shows that I want to go to immediately after Riot ends and other stuff going on around then in my life...I am reconsidering. I think if I knew exactly how I was getting there and how I was getting home and a rough idea of how long that would take I would have more interest despite everything else happening around Riot timeframe, but I'm imagining having to pay for an expensive Uber to the Orange Line (depending on how late it is) or just an Uber home and that does not sound exciting lol.

I wonder when they’ll announce daily lineups and single day passes. Pretty sure the last few years it was announced by now.

I hope soon because daily lineups being announced would also help a lot in my decision.

I kinda doubt the specific location is of particular concern for any of the artists. Most of them were probably locked in well ahead of that shift.

My point is mostly that, for somebody like Bad religion, I could see them saying "no" because there's just no space for them on the line-up that would match their pay and/or set time demands. And there really just isn't this year between the NOFX stage and wherever the Offspring are playing.

It's weird Bad Religion aren't doing any of the NOFX shows but that could be partially so they can position themselves as "headliners" in venues of that space once they're gone rather than be perceived as the perpetual opener. Sometimes doing their own thing just makes way more sense for bands.

    Makes a ton of sense!

stupid thing i enjoy is going through the names i dont know and trying to describe what they sound like based off 1 or 2 songs.

Man, Lonely Island would be a fun set at Riot. They playing Bonnaroo and Summerfest in 2019 gives me hope.

My partner ultimately decided to come with me this year so... Pretty glad I booked the room I did over by the Midway Airport! Got her a Deluxe pass, booked our flights, and a hotel room in Chicago proper for Wednesday evening.

I've been spending the day digging into the artists on the line-up I wasn't aware of or was less familiar with, listening to some old favorites and I'm getting more stoked by the minute despite all of the uncertainty.

Strung Out is in California on the 20th. So I assume they will play Sunday, although it could still be Saturday.

Since Rise Against will probably be around anyway since they aren’t on tour during Riot Fest, I wouldn’t complain if Pennywise had Tim and Joe come out and sing some covers again. That was a highlight of their set for me last year.

Random thing I noted on the web site last night: Beck and Pavement are listed as co-headliners. The way they've set-up the current poster it doesn't really showcase it very well so I'm curious how the dailies are going to look.

I'd imagine they'll be there at some point during the weekend anyway so... Why not? Haha.

I got the impression that the two would be playing the same day since it looks like Pavement’s name is attached to Beck’s. But I wasn’t expecting them to co-headline. I assumed Pavement would be direct support

That's my assumption still, honestly... It's just interesting that the festival seems to be positioning them as a co-headliner.

I'm also just excited to see the daily posters this time around because the format is quite different than how they usually present it.

That actually makes sense with Pavement being above the next line of subheadliners and taking up so much of Beck’s sign. But I assume it will be like Queens of the Stone Age last year. They were a “co-headliner”, but there was really no difference between them and the other bands closing out the Roots stage.

Well, at the very least it allows them to say that not all of the headliners are repeats.

It also kinda feels like they're trying to highlight another key get for the year. The other thing I gleaned from that list is that NOFX is listed before the Offspring, St. Vincent, and Rob Zombie.

Which is... Interesting. Because I've had at least 3-4 people that I know personally tell me they didn't even realize NOFX was playing until they looked at the poster for a second or third time. LOL

after doing some fb and reddit browsing today - the suburb vs city divide on social media is the funniest subplot this year. city folk always had the advantage since they had the fest AND the superiority complex, but now that they lost the festival, its a much more even battlefield and the surburb folk are pouncing on it haha (and dont get me wrong, its all dumb and wish it could be a unified fanbase and about the music, but since i cant control what others do or say, might as well enjoy watching it..)

It's really weird how people are pointing out some of the concerns as if its like... A character defect or something?

"You city folk just can't hack it! Back in my day, I used to drive 90 minutes in traffic just to get to Warped Tour! Stop being such a little WUSS and just sit in traffic and ignore the lack of transit options you little PANSIES!"

...Or maybe the person just bought a ticket to something a year ago assuming they'd be able to get there easily via public transit and now they can't. And that person doesn't own a car so instead of paying $30 or whatever to get to the festival over the weekend it's going to be a $100 round-trip each day and not everybody has that kind of scratch.

I'm sure it'll all get sorted out. But man, the judgements and aspersions people are casting based purely on reactions to this are fucking wild.

Agreed. I don't have a superiority complex about the city. I mean I'm from Elgin lol but I don't have a car. It's just a fact that there's more options for people from the suburbs to get into the city than there are for everyone from the city to get out to one specific suburban town.

I’m generally curious what happened with Cartel and Saosin on that 20 Years of Tears tour. They’re both on a bunch of dates but miss Chicago. I assumed it would make them shoe ins for Riot.

They where asked and said no

    or weren’t asked at all.

Cartel have never played and don’t tour much.

saosin played once 10 years ago with Anthony green

I also remembered today that The Aquabats have no Chicago show on their summer tour and I for sure thought they’d be on the lineup. Huh

With bands like Saosin and Cartel, who are now "legacy" acts, I always wonder how much of that decision comes down to their fee versus the set time or poster placement they'd get.

Looking at the poster, I'm struggling to see a scenario where Saosin would be billed anywhere above the NOFX part of the poster. Same with Cartel. And when I think about what that band would want to play versus what somebody like, say, Cursive or Sincere Engineer would get? I dunno. The math feels like it would be a little wonky. Because there's still name recognition but it's nowhere near what it used to be.

I could be underestimating their draw and overestimating what they'd be asking for moneywise but... It just seems like there may not have been a spot for them this year given the other artists they have booked?
