Good short interview here as I sit here depressed over the anxiety I have over my heart now. Sigh.

I think I've told this story before, but before I took my current job I worked the overnight shift at one of those huge Amazon warehouses, and I have never felt more communist than when talking to the other workers there during the short little breaks and they would say how they were afraid to take breaks to go pee or even to stop if they were having chest pain because they didn't want to get in trouble and risk getting fired because they needed the money from the job so badly

I had already been accepted to my current job but was in a holding pattern for 2 months and was doing some per diem stuff and doing the Amazon job at night, so I wasn't worried about pissing the Amazon managers off or getting canned, and I would constantly tell everyone working there that you can stop and go pee or poo if you need to like a human being, and you absolutely can and should stop if anything feels wrong medically, like your chest hurts or you can't breathe

I had worked at FedEx in the past and I had already seen what Amazon was doing where they were very careful not to say the words "you can't stop to pee" or "don't stop the line if something feels wrong" but they constantly just overwhelm you with the idea that the line needs to keep moving no matter what and you can only piss or shit on breaks

 

me, in my head, while telling people they actually are allowed to pee in a toilet or stop working if they feel like they're having a heart attack:


meanwhile I'm constantly getting Dove deodorant spray or toilet paper sent to my house the next morning Prime so I know I'm a hypocritical dipshit

I have no direct management in office with me so I'm pretty free to handle my workload as I see fit, but every now and then I'm like "man, getting real sick of looking at this computer, I should go drive the forklift for a bit"

and I'll find something not-important to do on the forklift

 

the closest job I've had to one of those Amazon facilities was working at the Hobby Lobby distribution center

worst job/hardest physical job I've ever had, quit after like 3 days

 

I feel you. My boss is primarily at another property, so I get plenty of moments where I'm hunting for things to do just to keep my mind alive.

 

I definitely enjoyed the physical aspect of the job - I think I lost like 15-20 lbs just in the short time I was there - I just felt bad for the people who felt like they couldn't push back on the ridiculous / illegal demands for fear of losing the job altogether

a lot of the people working there were significantly older than me and struggled to keep up with the fast pace & heavy loads

 

Okay, I mentioned this briefly in my comment about my job, but has anyone worked for a "black sheep" style department in a typical office environment?

So I guess our department was extremely poorly run before my previous boss took over and that contributes to it, I think that's probably why the CEO told interns he "hated" us. But also my previous boss took over 5 years ago lol so idk.

Also there's a contingent in middle management that has a sexist vendetta against us which recently resulted in them successfully firing my previous boss behind some sexist bullshit. Same contingent retaliated with a total bullshit infraction against 2 of the other women on my team after they filed an HR complaint.

The last contributing factor I identified was that there's a perception we do no/fake work which is caused by a combination of the dpt previously being poorly run, what I described before where my work is not exactly what other "software devs" think of as "software dev" work, and that we don't work much with most other departments. The closer another dpt works with (or sits to!) us the more they tend to like us. There's only 6 of us and the average age of the 4 of us that go into the office is like 27, we're fun. But we still feel very much up against it lol. Just wondering if any of this made anyone think any thoughts

 

it's not exactly the same, but myself and all of my immediate coworkers are nurses while my boss and the entire rest of her team and everyone else she manages are all psychologists

I realize as I am typing this that that doesn't sound like a big deal at all, but it makes for an interesting dynamic where sometimes it's like we are speaking entirely different languages or are from entirely different planets from each other

 

Wish it was someone better than Josh fucking Hawley doing this but it’s still fun to see I guess lol
