Player's Log: Xtreme Sports/Shantae

Having completed Wendy: Every Witch Way, I moved on to the other WayForward games from the GBC era, both of which were rereleased recently on Switch: Xtreme Sports and the original Shantae.

Xtreme Sports is interesting because I always thought it was just a Track & Field/California Games type title, and it is, but it's also technically a "Sports RPG", in that the game proper takes place on an island and involves exploration and discovery as much as it does actually competing in events.

You also challenge NPCs like Pokemon, which is how you earn medals to proceed in the game, and this both works for and against the game proper. It's nice to have challenges to test your skills and give you goals to shoot for, but you'll also have like ten people to challenge in the same level, which gets tedious very quickly.

Some of the controls are also kind of vague. In the in-line skating challenges, references are made to a Double Jump that I'm almost certain no one mentioned how to pull off. Apparently it involves using a particular power-up while doing a spin jump, which is not something I would've figured out on my own.

Shantae, on the other hand, is every bit the bright and colorful platformer you'd expect. I did not expect even the first game to have (very light) Metroidvania elements, but here we are. There are some cons: it's not entirely clear where to go, which is frustrating, but also Shantae's main weapon, her hair, is very difficult to gauge timing with, which dampens the fun. The little I've played so far though has been very charming.

I was playing the Switch versions, but I might actually go back to emulating the GBC versions, at least in Shantae's case, so I can use cheats and just enjoy the ride. Xtreme Sports I'll also give another try, but I'm not sure I'll stick with it. We'll see.

 

Last night I parked my SeaMoth at 199m and swam down to a really enticing area…found some diamonds for the first time, which I needed, but also encountered a surprise scare…Thank god I had a first aid kit. Shit’s getting real.

damn Visions looks amazing. The Trials remake is one of my favorite games and this looks like more of that and more
