I mean Disney+ having all the Hulu shit is very stupid

I feel like I'm going crazy, how am I in the wrong for thinking that's a stupid idea? Disney+ has been for Disney/Pixar/kids related shit from the time it started. Why would they dump the entire Hulu catalog on it when Hulu already exists?

I think it's stupid and redundant as long as Hulu exists. But I wouldn't mind if they got rid of Hulu, merged the services all under regular D+ pricing

It is stupid, but also like you don't have to scroll through a busy UI to find a specific thing you're looking for is all I'm sayin lol

this isn't new outside the US. Disney has had the majority stake in Hulu for years, and bought out Comcast's remaining stake last year. aside from Hulu in Japan (which is a completely separate entity from Disney's Hulu), the platform doesn't exist elsewhere. Disney wanted to find a way to distribute all that general entertainment content in other countries, and came up with a separate tab/platform/content umbrella called Star outside of the US. that content has been integrated into Disney+ for 3 years in those countries, and they felt compelled to do it with Hulu this year because they finally had full control of the platform (that and the Hulu name is synonymous with their general entertainment offerings in the US, so a rebrand to Star would probably be confusing).

of course you could argue that the Disney brand has always been more oriented towards younger audiences, and there is merit to saying that they have to better integrate more adult-oriented/non-Disney-branded content into Disney+ if they don't want to alienate folks who subscribe to the service for those reasons (like adding an option to disable the content from showing up in the service). but ultimately their goal is to end up with just one streaming platform in the US, just how it works globally. it probably doesn't make a ton of sense to have to maintain two separate platforms in the long run, especially given their acquisitions of Marvel, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox, etc. it also probably has to do with the fact that they want more subscribers to Disney+, and can't draw in older audiences who don't care for children's content or big tentpole franchises like Marvel and Star Wars.

Yeah totally. Honestly hate scrolling through any streaming app, they're all a mess. I just use the search bar or cast it from my phone lol

Nah, you're absolutely right. I hate it.

I have Disney+ because I like Disney stuff, I don't want to scroll through a bunch of other shit if I'm in the mood for something Disney. There's not even a way to look at recently added Disney stuff, it's just full of the Hulu shit.

Just another thing nobody asked for that we get shoved down our throats. Same thing happened with Max and now I use that probably half as much as I used to because I have to wade through all the Discovery shit.

One of the strangest opinions on a site full of strange opinions. Why does the Disney app have stuff that Disney owns?????????

No, why is Hulu content on a Disney app when Hulu exists? That's idiotic. If they want a single app experience, do the dumbass shit HBO did and just create a single app.

Alright fair enough point to be honest, I digress. They prob will just make a singular app in general and I think that’s how it is already overseas? It may all be under the Hulu brand

It's dumb. Yesterday we were trying to find something to watch after dinner before bed. Before, I'd just be scrolling through Disney-centric shit. Everything was fair game. Now, I have to push past fucking 25 different headers for like "Hulu Reality" and "Featuring K-Pop Idols". Just give me the fuckin kid stuff

Netflix allows me to go onto the Kids profile to only view kids things. Disney, inherently a children's entertainment app, only allows segregated versions of this process unless you want to see all the Hulu slop. As far as I know, you can't view Disney/Pixar/Misc. Kids content at once. They are separated in tabs at the top, but if you want Disney content mixed in with Pixar content, you also need to see The fuckin Good Doctor and Attack on Titan. Get that shit out of here!

And, to be clear, if this is always how the app worked I don't think I'd be annoyed. I'd have grown accustomed to clicking through menus. For years now, it was a perfectly fine app. One of the easier ones to navigate and find what I want/to browse. Now, it's clogged up.

i guess it really comes down to offering different audiences different content filtering options. the reason i'm personally on board with it on my end is that as a subscriber to both, i find the Hulu app to be incredibly unusable. the app consistently crashes on my Chromecast With Google TV, there's no option to output HDR video or surround sound audio, the UI is terrible, and content navigation and recommendations aren't as good as they could be. i enjoy having Hulu integrated into Disney+ since the app is a lot less buggy, HDR and 5.1 are available for the same content (although content under the Star tab overseas gets Atmos support, which i wish we had), and it's integrated with content from Disney+ i was already watching.

that being said, i do agree with everyone that their recommendations and content display options need a ton of work. it is stupid that you can't disable seeing Hulu content if a) you don't subscribe, or b) you simply don't want to and would rather watch Hulu stuff through Hulu. and the new content carousel at the top of the homepage currently seems to be skewing more towards Hulu content. they should definitely find a better way to balance it all.

i also take back my comment on the kids profiles. i pay for my family's access to the service and just looked at the profile we set up for my nephew. navigation in that section is pretty clunky, and some content geared towards children is inaccessible due to the content warnings about tobacco use and cultural insensitivities, which obviously presents problems of its own.

It’s less about being wrong and just making a big complaint over something small. Like, yea, it’s stupid how they have done it. But it’s also not a big deal.

No one asked why the Disney app has stuff that Disney owns though, so take it easy. The complaint is, a once decent app that allowed a specific experience is now spammed with a bunch of shit that no one asked for and ruined that experience. If it had to be done, they could've done it a lot better. At least give an option when open the app to view Disney+ content or Hulu content. If you don't know what exactly what you want to watch it's a lot harder to find anything.

You're the only one categorizing it as a BIG DEAL, we're talking about a streaming service in the streaming service thread.

People in here are acting furious about it though. Why? Because to skip seeing Hulu stuff when you're trying to find stuff for your kids to watch you haven to take the 3 whole seconds to switch between the Pixar content hub and the Disney Junior content hub?
