I've seen Sideways and Nebraska, I remember liking them at the time.

Nebraska and the holdovers are good. I think election is okay and didn’t like about Schmidt. Don’t remember how I feel about the descendants and haven’t seen the rest. I’m dreading watching downsizing for doughboys though. There’s no way that’s a good film.

Election is correct about those types of students though. They usually turn into awful adults.

  5. I should probably watch Sideways so I can revisit that Doughboys ep with Mookie. Don't really have plans on watching beyond what they cover.

  6. Jesus Christ. Thunder Road (2018) has me fucked up.

  9. Thunder Road (2018) - 9/10
I expected this to be sad (in Cummings' own uniquely funny way), but good lord, I did not expect it to be THIS sad. Maybe I'm just going through a lot right now. To me, Thunder Road is a heartbreaking film about compounded grief, about the way things can be taken from us for seemingly no reason and returned to us just as quickly. I may be overselling the tragic elements because it's also a hilarious showcase for writer/director/performer Jim Cummings (the classroom scene in particular), but above all, it's just impressive to see a vision this distinct and touching executed so well by a first-time director.

The Last Stop in Yuma County - 7.5/10
With news of Francis Gallupi directing one of two upcoming Evil Dead films, there's been growing anticipation for his directorial debut. Horror fans may be slightly disappointed to know The Last Stop in Yuma County has more in common with The Hateful Eight than Army of Darkness, but for fans of crime-thrillers, slowburners that pop off, or the character acting of folks like Jim Cummings and Richard Brake, it's a wildly tense and promising (if somewhat predictable) film.

Evil Does Not Exist (2024) - I love Ryusuke Hamaguchi, hes telling contemporary stories in a mystical way. They feel so fresh and surprising. They don't rely on subverting an existing tropes and worn formats; they feel like the next evolution. That these are modern stories couldn't not have been told last decade or the decade before. Ive left my take on what happens in the movie in the Evil Does Not Exist thread, its full of spoilers and its a movie that really benefits from going in blind.

The Words Greatest Sinner (1962) - I got rained on the way home from seeing EDNE and got sick and had a fever when I watched this. I thought i was going crazy theres so much weird stuff happening. Then I looked it up and yeah its just nuts. Its intentionally and maybe unintentionally very funny. Heavy handed in its message but its not wrong and it gets points for being in early. Tims really cool to look at.

Game Night (2018) - My fever continued and I wanted something easy. This was what i wanted. Pretty funny, could've tightened up the plot. Kind weird id recognised a bunch of memes that came from this but never heard anyone talk about this movie.

    Jack (1996) - Bruh.

The Killing (1956) - Kubrick smashing out straight noir. A tight heist done before heists movies would start devouring themselves. Is this the first movie to do clown mask robbers? Tim was great again, pumped up for Paths of Glory!

Grimace convincing you to watch Jack non-ironically is one of the funniest things that ever happened here.

I definitely saw Jack as a kid, but I can’t remember anything about it except Robin Williams being in it.

Edit: Funny in hindsight to realize that was my first Coppola film.

The Talented Mr. Ripley 9/10 - I was just a little too young when this came out, but after watching Ripley on Netflix we decided to go back check it out. Comparing the two is really fun; Damon's Ripley appears much more playful and desperate to fit in, and his decisions feel way less calculated than in the miniseries. Andrew Scott plays him like a parasite, latching on to Dickie and systematically taking over. But yeah, this film rocks. The final 10 minutes filled me with such dread.

  15. The Burning - 6/10
More like The Boring, etc, etc.

I'm used to early slashers being boring between kills, but The Burning is particularly dry unless you're interested in the worst name in Hollywood producing scenes where the worst teen boys of the 80s are really bad about taking "no" as an answer. We love seeing Jason Alexander as a jock with hair, the fades to red are visually inspired, and the raft scene is undeniably one of the best slasher sequences of the 80s, but the rest of this thing (including its red herring) just kind of lands with a thud.

    Nebraska - 4/5

I haven’t seen this since theaters but I forgot how funny it is, Forte is good, June Squibb is hilarious but Bruce Dern is fantastic. Hilarious and sad while barely saying anything. A great performance. I think this is my favorite Payne film.

  17. I'm in the middle of Nebraska and enjoying it.

    Sideways - 6.5/10
This has been on my list for a long time and I decided to throw it into the middle of Doughboys' Paynke month. It's fine as a broad comedy, but fails to really say anything worthwhile about its characters. Jack is a sporadically charming asshole; Miles is a somewhat-sympathetic sadsack that doesn't agree with his friend's infidelities, but also will enable them and still do anything for his friend, which is a slightly interesting dynamic, but not particularly unique or touching. So far, it feels like Payne's strength is finding meaning in the mundane, or creating unique situations for mostly average joe types that somehow lead to profundity. Sideways feels like a competent dramady that fails to offer anything beyond surface-level insight about the characters it asks you to care about. Great casting, though.

It is crazy how Sideways had a significant impact on the wine industry. Pinot noir jumped 170 percent in sales. It is hard to imagine some mid-budget drama having that impact these days.

That is a baffling take. Even if you're not a huge fan, Downsizing exists.

I haven't seen Citizen Ruth, but Downsizing is his worst film and all the others are pretty close in quality. Alexander Payne is like Chili's (Chili's is good).

Descendents or election is my favorite probably. I missed Nebraska though
