man I saw them at the tiniest little venue I’ve ever seen in Lancaster PA with torche years ago, what a show

Last time I saw them was in the summer of 2013 with Royal Thunder in Champaign, IL. Bought a screenprinted poster from that gig that's actually hanging in my cubby sized office at the moment. One of the only pieces of music art my wife liked enough to hang in our house. lol.

I saw half their set at the starland ballroom in New Jersey one year me and @Dinkleberg were late because of traffic or something

Saw them play with Inter Arma in the alley behind what is now BoDillaz here in Richmond back in 2007 and it was fucking nuts

Dude I still think about those shows. I remember I was unable to get out of work a bit early for the Deafheaven/Baroness show in NJ and traffic was absolute dogwater when I was making it to you in the evening. Then I had to take a wicked dump on the way to the next Baroness show and we missed half of Torche’s set and now they aren’t a band anymore and I still think about that bro :(

Baroness was dope last night. Happy they played War, Wisdom, and Rhyme. Red Fang was good too - I hadn't really listened to them since their first album 15ish years ago and was impressed.

Sounds like a better time than when I saw Inter Arma and Black Tusk in a Harrisonburg elementary school auditorium during Macrock. That was a weird vibe tbh.

Slayer v. Obituary round 1 is brutal

I’m predicting the final is Crowbar v. Bolt Thrower, with Crowbar winning

i won't spoil it but there were a few head scratchers.

my personal final four would be cannibal corpse, dying fetus, godflesh and bolt thrower with CC over godflesh

Thats def understandable! I really ought to do a CC deep dive one day, they’re probably my biggest death metal blind spot

i don't love them tbh they're just obscenely heavy, my favorite DM band is bolt thrower so i'd go with them if I'm picking just pure subjective fave

Some of these inclusions are real headscratchers. I like Conan and Xibalba but it feels weird including them on this when they're more contemporary bands compared to the OGs on this list. Especially when you have omissions like Mortician, Crytopsy, and Death.

And Candlemass, Type O Negative, Warning, and Sleep have no place on a heaviest metal list period...as much as it pains me to say that about Candlemass especially.

Personal final 4 would probably be Bolt Thrower, Demilich, Cannibal Corpse, and Hatebreed. Beyond that, it's all a coin flip.

Def worth it they're so consistent and I personally think modern death metal would be way different without them

Plus, they were featured in ace venture pet detective.

    a literal succubitch

Corpsegrinder is unmatched as vocalist. There's nothing particularly "deep" about them beyond being gnarly as hell but bro's vocal rhythms are always just so satisfying. He knows exactly where to put the syllables to sound as monstrous and feral as possible.

I'm listening to that last Whitechapel LP in prep for the Lorna Shore tour this Fall and I know their sound has semi-recently changed quite a bit but I did not expect this to sound so much like Opeth... I'm into it tho
