Part of me feels like the MacOS virtualization on iPadOS will be coming during WWDC and all the apple pundits will feel vindicated in their bitching. There just seems to be a lot of smoke there.

Kinda disagree here. I bought the M1 iPad Pro with the hopes of iPadOS gaining just a bit more functionality to take advantage of the chipset, and here we are on the damn M4 chip now and iPadOS still sucks. Apple is holding back the platform and they could make improvements to add functionality without adding complexity to it, but they don't. iPadOS is still a *mostly* simple OS to navigate for casual use. I do agree they need to clean up the multitasking gestures a LOT though.

I swear if they gatekeep virtualization to M4 chips only, i'm gonna lose it. There's ZERO reason they can't bring it to the M1/M2 iPads. I wouldn't be as upset if they made it a Pro-only feature, but iPad Pros have shared chipsets with Macbooks dating back to 2020. Absolutely no excuse.

At this point I'm holding onto my 12.9" M1 Pro till it stops getting OS updates. No reason to upgrade. Screen is still perfect for content consumption, which is the only thing i use it for these days besides light web browsing. My hope is they bring a simpler OLED screen to the iPad Air in a few years, and that's the one I'll buy (if I don't end up getting a cheaper Vision headset for watching movies/shows.)

I'm less confident of this. They seem to be all-in on making iPadOS *just enough* like a cursor OS without actually making it pleasant to use.

I'm in the camp of "They do this to the iPad to sell more Macs. They do not want to cannibalize themselves" which is the exact opposite of Apple under Jobs. We likely would have never gotten the Pencil but he also knew it was better to take your own business rather than lose it to someone else. The difference here is that Mac sales are strong and iPads are really the only tablet in the game that matters.

They would lose so much goodwill if they didn't open that up to the SoCs that everyone knows are the same as in their Macs that they just stopped selling earlier this year. Apple almost did too well with the M1 SoC because it was so much better than anything else out there and I still see no reason to move on from my MBA or iPad Pro with it.

Don’t get me wrong I want a new pro because I’m one of those that always wants the newest but I have an M1 Pro that sits in a drawer. It’s essentially brand new. For my own use case, there’s nothing my pro max phone won’t do that I’d need an iPad for.

As for car payments… I work at a credit union and I take car payments all day. I routinely see payments over 900 a month and then look to see what kind of car it is and it’s often some truck that costs as much as a house.

I guess me when it comes to $ to £, but it is an expense through my business.

Me too. The one car was paid off so we decided to splurge on the other one :)

Just thinking about it this morning with the reviews - there is no way that iPadOS 18 is going to bring any major paradigm shift to the devices. They would have held back the devices until then or even to September. Not like iPad sales were hurt by being a bit behind on the SoC.

Went to look at the new iPads today and walked out with a 13” Pro, oops.

The 13” and Magic Keyboard together now don’t weigh much more than the old 11” Pro and Magic Keyboard, and in the hand it actually feels lighter because of how much thinner they both are. So now I’m back to trying to make this setup a laptop replacement, I’m sure it’ll really happen this time :-) (though actually having function keys now is a game changer for me)

Ordered an 11" iPad Pro via Amazon, since it was $50 off and I could split the payments monthly. Of course, it has no estimated shipping date yet... womp womp.

Same. It's really tempting, even with all my complaints about iPad OS, to buy a new one.

Just picked up my 11” pro and Magic Keyboard. Probably didn’t need to upgrade from my 2nd gen Pro, which still works great, but I use my iPad a ton and travel with it a lot, so I got pulled in by the slimmer design.

Looks and feels great! Also excited to finally have a centered front-facing camera when mounted on the keyboard for meetings.

After using it for half a day of work first impressions are that the new keyboard really is a game-changer and, for my use at least, worth the upgrade alone. Closing my eyes I could have sworn I was using a MacBook

just read about the new motion sickness feature coming in iOS 18 and am very excited for it. I tend to get sick on the metro and in Ubers while looking at my phone, so I've sorta just resorted to headphones and eyes closed whenever I take them. Hoping this really does help

The motion sickness feature is hopefully going to be great for my wife. She can't look at her phone in the car at all without feeling ill. Also the eye tracking seems incredibly cool.

I never knew lockdown mode was a thing until I helped this member at my credit union because she couldn’t use her online banking. That seems intense

I brought my m1 iPad Pro to work today, because i might take advantage of our business account and get a new pro setup. Do i need it? No not at all, but my mind is telling it will get used far more because it’s so much lighter. The M1 Pro with the Magic Keyboard feels like a brick sometimes
