Someone explain these games to me

 

The bugginess of Skyrim is driving me insane. Paarthurnax's skeleton just randomly spawned in the middle of Whiterun lmao

 

The general jist is that the games take place in a world called Gamindustri that is a collective anthropomorphism of the console wars, with each character representing a company or console.

The main cast, for example, represent Sega (Neptune), Sony (Noire), Microsoft (Vert), and Nintendo (Blanc), and they each rule their own kingdom and compete for "shares" earned from their adoring subjects.

There's not a lot of continuity between games in the series, but the main concepts remain standard.

The games themselves are generally some iteration of an action-RPG, with changes to the mechanics depending on the game. There are side games as well, including one in the tactical-RPG genre, a shoot-em-up, and a rhythm game.

They are love letters to gaming as a whole, and also heavily revel in anime tropes, with what I would term low-key fanservice. They've done crossovers with Senran Kagura and the Sega Hard Girls franchises, if that helps bring context.

There's also an anime adaptation that loosely adapts the second and third games in the main series, along with OVAs that add new original adventures. They're fun and funny, but heavy on melodrama and clichés.

Anyway, my favorite character is Nepgear, Neptune's sister, who represents Game Gear and who in the third game has one of my favorite running gags of anything I've seen.

 

To add onto what Pen said (nice writeup btw), these 3 are what can be considered the main games as there's like a dozen or so "Neptunia" games haha but the rest of those are spinoffs. There's also Megadimension Neptunia which is the most recent which came out on PS4/PC in 2016 and Switch in 2020. That would be entry 4 in the main games and we SHOULD be getting word of entry 5 sooooon™.

Also my fav is Noire. All of them are quite the characters though, it's a fun series!

I like Noire as well. The scene in the anime where everyone finds out about her hobby is a top tier reaction.

Megadimension Neptunia VII (should be a dash between V and II to clear up the confusion but whatever) had an enhanced port on the PS4, which I thought was strange, but I guess to add the VR feature and I played that one and the original on switch. It’s been a long time coming but I’m glad we’re finally getting a fifth entry. Spinoff wise, Neptunia: Sisters vs Sisters is probably my favourite of the bunch with Nepgear (favourite character as well) being front and center for the first time since the second game??

 

I ninja edited! But you got to me too quick! Yeah I never got the enhanced Megadimension, was it JUST for the VR stuff? I never got any Sony VR so I never saw a need to rebuy it.

It's crazy we really only got Megadimension and it's VR version on the PS4 era where we got the OG 3 on PS3 and then alllll the remakes and spinoffs on Vita. I've been meaning to buy the PS5 port of the first game but I heard as it's just a port it's not reflective of how powerful and advanced the fifth entry will be. I'm hyped for sure. Gimme all them in 4k goofiness.

 

Also DanielRPK, who's mainly a tv and movies leaker stated that a Kingdom Hearts adaptation is on the way (didn't say whether a movie or show) and ALSO that KH4 is next year.

 

The VR version enhanced the battle mechanics a bit from the original but I wasn’t too crazy about it.

I’ve been meaning the grab the port for the PS5 for a while now, I just haven’t yet for some reason. I’ve actually never played any of the PS3 releases, VII was my introduction to the series and I’m ecstatic to dive into the og trilogy.

The PS3 releases kinda show their age so I was super happy that the subsequent Vita remakes were top tier. You're in for a treat!
