With Kacey, I think she needed a safe kind of "retreat" album. I hear Deeper Well as a reset after her attempt at a big new sonic direction mostly missed the mark. I also think that album is doing more new things with the Golden Hour sound than this album is doing with the Midnights sound, but I get the complaint.

And I am so, so ready to move on from the Eilish/Bridgers sound. Including from those artists, but especially from their imitators. I feel like every single new singer-songwriter sounds like Phoebe lite.

I like Deeper Well much more than most of Starcrossed, so it worked!

I couldn’t agree more with you. As much as I like Gracie Abrams, Lizzy McAlpine, etc. they are all starting to blend together for me.

When Phoebe released “Sidelines” and it was her first song that felt to me like it was looking backwards sonically, was the beginning of the end for me.

Karma got close despite the terrible lyrics, and parts of Lavender Haze. But not quite there.

Yeah and those are my two favorites off Midnights, haha. Bejeweled has it going on too.

She should work with Annie for an entire album.

There's no chance she's competing with herself on release weekend.

She's topped every other artist on the charts, why not herself.

This is gonna be a hard record for people to accept in the moment with its sonic similarities to the previous 3 records. But I do think it’s her best offering front to back in some time. Very curious how it grows.

This made me check and wow, me too! When I got the label created alert this morning I was sure I wasn’t getting it for another week at least.

She must have stepped her shipping game up somehow. Her store had to refund a ton of orders that didn’t arrive in time for Christmas.

Yes but those sounds have driven indie and pop for the last 5-6 years

  12. I could be completely wrong, but I feel like mainstream pop is currently in flux between 80s throwback (largely Antonoff's doing) and bedroom pop influence, which has hit TikTok more than it has Top 40 radio. But with artists like Tyler, Frank Ocean, and Halsey working with Mac DeMarco, Alex G, and King Krule, I think that's where we're headed next. Weirder sounds, more experimentation. I think those same artists are steering the next sound of indie, but again, just my hypothesis. Could be completely out of touch, but it's what I'm hearing.

Even Olivia Rodrigo falls into Phoebe mode like 50 percent of the time, and I would really prefer more songwriters sounding like the other half of her music.

True, but they have very similar vocal styles! That hushed whisper-sing thing is so, so prevalent right now, and both of them are to credit/blame. I'd like to hear less of that from our next wave of singer-songwriters.

Also, "very different sounds" is maybe going too far, given that Billie has two Oscars for songs that could absolutely be Phoebe Bridgers songs.

IMO there's only one Billie song that sounds strikingly like Phoebe, and it's Male Fantasy.

I feel good having not returned to the album for the day. I think I'm happy to wait now until it's actually streaming.

fantastic artist but theres nothing unique about her sound, it’s a lot of the Olivia sound. You can really hear Dan’s influence over her work.

Id love to see more pop artists reinvent themselves, give us that Radiohead Bends to Kid A jump.
