I've been sticking with library books for financial reasons, but I was in Ocean State Job Lot and saw a brand new hardcover of this for $3.99(!!!) and couldn't pass it up -->

 

I’ll never forgive DAW for switching the art on the last 2.5 books of Osten Ard. Just pay Whelan. Everything I’ve learned about DAW over the last couple of years through their handling of Ruocchio and Sun Eater as well as Tad just sucks.

 

Did they switch cover artists partway thru the series...?

 

Yep, and it looks like generic garbage. Brothers of the Wind, Into The Narrowdark, and the upcoming final book The Navigators Children aren’t Whelan.

 

Decided to start reading Dune. Meant to after the first movie but never ended up doing it. Started this morning.

My plan is to eventually get through all the ones written by Frank. We'll see. I already know the broad strokes of the each, but want to see how it all comes together.

 

I actually finished Dune over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Will be picking up Messiah after I read book 2 of Thomas Covenant.

 

I ended up having to return The Darkness That Comes Before after extending and still only making it to Chapter 4, but I am going to find a copy to purchase and try again on my next vacation from work. I really only get a chance to read one day a week right now and I wasn't able to keep everything straight reading that infrequently.

 

Finished Rise of the Ranger by Philip Quaintrell and this is going to be a massive story. 9 books and already i'm eager to read more. Traditional multi-POV fantasy with big bag, traitors, elves, dragons, centaurs etc and if this is what book 1 has to offer them i'm curious about the rest.

 

Granted I'm less than 200 pages into The Well of Ascension, but I think I'm enjoying this more than The Final Empire. And nothing's really happened yet! The world-building is just so fun and interesting that I don't really care about plot just yet.

 

Ignorant question, but did they rename Mistborn to The Final Empire? I haven't been paying attention

 

Other way around kinda. Initial title was Mistborn: The Final Empire - since it was a mashup of those two books, and since Brandon wanted The Final Empire but Tor (probably wisely) didn't want to name a first book in a series Final. Some of the other editions have dropped The Final Empire, leaving it just Mistborn lately.

 

Hero of Ages might be even better. Nearly perfect trilogy.

 

Picked up Heroes Die and Yellowface for a pound each!

I’m very excited to announce that I’ve begun publishing my writing!


I started writing fantasy stories 23 years ago, so it’s about time. Today I’m publishing a novella entitled LEAFDUST & DEADWOOD. It’s the prequel to a series called The Garden Knight, which is a heroic fantasy-adventure about a gardener and his dog who are swept up into a world of monstrous plants, court politics, old magic, awakened gods, foul sorcerers, strange ghosts, nefarious plots, secret societies, and harrowing escapes. I’m also announcing a preorder for book 1, TANGLEWEED & WATERBLOOM, which will release on April 19. This will be the first full adventure of many in the Garden Knight world—I plan to publish a lot more stories in this series, as well as other books I’ve been working on.


Mostly I’m just excited to have something finished and out to the world. It’s been a lot of fulfilling work to put these together by myself. man, I wanted to like Thomas Covenant, but I'm struggling with book 2 after struggling with book 1. Donaldson had some of the same issues with Gap Cycle, but there's so much exposition about stuff they are going to do and not nearly enough of them actually doing the thing they're talking about doing. I'll see if I feel like finishing it, but nearing a DNF from me.

I actually just bought an audiobook version of Dune from someone on Etsy for $4. After the purchase they sent me a link for the audiobook digitally. The version on the Google Play store seems newer with multiple different people playing the different parts, and I was looking for an older version that sounds like it's from the 70's or 80's with just the one narrator doing the whole thing. I figured there was a chance it wouldn't work out but I was willing to roll the dice because the price was so low. Everything worked out fine.
