Going to be hard to top this lineup. Even Winona Fighter is pretty fun, saw them at Iowa Is For Lovers, theyre a solid producer away from having a very high ceiling… just need to be a little less juvenile and add some more structure to their songs

I know those are just showcase bands and are always meant to be newer acts trying to get their name out. Like two years ago Wet Leg was everywhere and just beginning to take over the world. I get that.

But I haven't heard of any of those artists outside black keys, Ben killer, cassadee pope.

I gotta keep an eye out for some off branded shows that week though. Fun mini shows pop up all over town that week that aren't technically sxsw

Man SXSW week sucks now imo. It’s completely gone downhill with just corporate shit.

I've only been in Austin for four years so I don't know what it used to be like but all I know is that its a corporate circle jerk. 2022 it was allllllllll nft, crypto

I don't know this whole "music" aspect of the festival

Man it used to be amazing. You could see some big artists for free without even having a pass, tons of showcases for every genre you can think so, surprise type shows, etc etc etc. it used to be so fun.

    Surprise, Surprise Prestigious

Following the SXSW vent sesh - it also gets publicly shamed by participating bands every year because it's touted as doing "for musicians" what it did in like 2010 (catapult indie bands into popularity) and it's nowhere near that anymore.

The late additions are always the better ones. The Bad Books show at LINE hotel, the Saddest Factory showcase at Mohawk... none of these were "official" participating bands until weeks before when they became their own events. I don't understand it.

I love the energy of the Michigan DIY scene and how they’ve created so many great fests but I have to wonder… have the people behind PUG Fest & Stoop Fest & Excellency & Tied Down ever considered joining forces?

they’re all cool as individual events but together they’d be like a Midwest version of Fest (or at least a modern equivalent to Bled Fest)

I feel like so many people (myself included) have done Coachella at least once before that they really need to deliver on the lineup, given you have to carve a week out of your life and literally pack like you're camping just to attend. Plus it costs an arm and a leg.

Winona Fighter opened the Something Corporate NYE Anaheim shows and definitely had a ton of promise, plus a song titled "You Look Like A Drunk Phoebe Bridgers" was amusing.

they definitely seem poised for a breakout if all goes according to plan ...

    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

It feels like we’re in a really bizarre era for big music fests where all these festivals are attempting to appeal to a younger demographic (which is obviously reasonable if they want to stay afloat in years to come), but instead of getting the new audience they’re aiming for, they’re just alienating the older audience they had and aren’t benefiting from it. Coachella’s lineup this year is a good example of this.

And honestly, it makes me scratch my head at a handful of the acts they got this year. Maybe I’m out of the loop, but I don’t think Gen Zers are going to go hard for The Aquabats or Blur.

A couple of the bookings seem like the festival is trying to save face with past attendees and are like “ah sorry it’s a lot of stuff you don’t know. Here’s a couple of acts we’ve had that you’ll like.” But that isn’t gonna work. People that have attended in the past aren’t gonna pay $500+ to see a couple acts.

I’m curious to see how this plays out. Not just with Coachella, but other fests that seem to be suffering from this sort of thing.
