Finally had a chance to articulate my thoughts on what this album means to me today, inspired a bit by Jason’s review of the Blink album. Shared this with friends on social media, but figured I’d share here too with all of the excitement. It’s a great (green) day.

Almost 30 years ago, I heard “Basketcase” on the radio, and it ended up setting the course of my musical tastes forever. I “borrowed” my parents’ copy of Dookie and never looked back. Green Day were my first real big concert (Pop Disaster). American Idiot was the soundtrack to my senior year of high school (sorry for chasing you through a hotel parking lot after your Albany show, Mike Dirnt). My wife and I saw American Idiot performed on Broadway and even met Billie Joe after…a life highlight only overshadowed by our wedding and births of our children (haha). And here we are all these years later; my daughter is about the same age I was when I heard that first Green Day song, and now her and her brother are the ones running around our house singing “Bada bing bada boom!” from the chorus of the newest Green Day single. This new album is incredible, and listening to it took me through this crazy, nostalgic journey, making me realize that these three guys from California have been the soundtrack to nearly my whole life. Here’s to the next 30 years.

Mid-90s were so nice. I was young enough that I didn’t really know what music was new or what the order of everything was.

Two very cool memories I have are off walking into a Warehouse Music to buy a replacement tape for the beat up, no-sleeve Dookie tape my uncle gave me and seeing a giant display for Insomniac. I had no idea if it was new or old. I just knew it said it was an album by Green Day and I asked my mom to buy me that tape instead.

I also remember walking into a K-Mart in my off-Los Angeles suburb and seeing another tape that said it was by Green Day. It had a green drawing of a girl and I grabbed it and asked my mom to buy it for me. I didn’t know if it was new or old or what the story behind it was.

Now, I know everything 9 months before it’s released and there’s no mystery or surprise. Lol.

This album marks yet another case where I preordered the vinyl on the day it went up for sale and could still have gotten it faster just going to my local record store. Tracking says my record is still in California; I'm in Michigan.

How hard is this?! Just ship your preorders out sooner! There should be some benefit to ordering direct from the artist store ahead of time. What's the point if you get the product 4-7 days AFTER release day?

Yea, despite shipping notification on Tuesday, mine has not moved yet. ETA the 24th.

Same. Annoying. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, obviously, but it just seems like such an easy problem to solve.

I’ve had to start doing mental gymnastics to prepare myself that my vinyl pre-order could arrive anywhere between two days before release to two months after release (lookin’ at you, Gaslight Anthem AP variant).

Did anyone ever explain what happened with that Gaslight Anthem variant?

I only got the one mass message that they were experiencing “shipping delays” haha. The pressing ended up being really nice looking, but unfortunately my Side B skips on a track. My Green Day order shows shipped too, so fingers crossed it’s here sometime before 2 months from now!

when your pre-order doesn’t arrive before or on release day = first world problem

I feel you. Same here lol.

That was so weird, because it seemed like every other variant of that record shipped out right around release day.

Oh, total first-world problem. But still! I get it when there's a vinyl delay, but when you can get it to stores/some customers on time, you should be able to get it to everyone on time.

Glad they brought Rob Cavallo back. They seem to do their best work with him.

Some of this newer era of Green Day seems to have a twangy 50s and 60s pop inspired sound to it. It’s not always my favorite from them, but for this album it works. These songs have some really nice hooks.

reading the title "Living In The 20s" I assumed it was talking about the 1920s. It took listening to the song to realize we are currently living in the 20s

I can count on one hand how many times I actually received a preorder on, or before, the release date.

I can always be better, so I'll always try. Supporter

So they're intentionally melodically quoting "Basket Case" in "The American Dream Is Killing Me" right?

I'm hearing the "I am one of those melodramatic fools" line in the section at 1:01 and the ending guitar solo but I'm not sure if they're trying to do something interesting that isn't working for me, or alternatively they are just out of ideas.

On my second listen now. This is a lot of fun, as I expected based on the singles. Feels good to really like a new Green Day record again.

Kept going back and forth between the deluxe 180g black vinyl and the indie store exclusive half pink/half black. Went with the latter and it looks and sounds great. No regrets there.
