I personally liked the meandering and weird song structures of LP1 and I think that worked in their favor to make them unique. Their transition to more traditional song structure comes at the cost of part of what I really enjoyed about them. So I'm echoing that this is just really similar to the other bands that loved them and held them as an influence in the 17 years since they've released anything, which is to say it's good and fine but it's just like. So within their comfort zone that it seems safe. The one thing most of the bands that had AF as an influence didn't really mine a ton was their weird song structures (with maybe Algernon doing it the most/best) and besides idk, I feel like not comparing it to LP1 at all is disingenuous -- then we'd be treating this like a debut, and in that case there's a tooooon of bands who did this during their break up and did it cooler.
That's just my 2 cents, and I wanna reiterate that I do enjoy this album, and it's fine. it's just not like great or amazing or anything

I guess the fact that an American football album won't make my top 10 of 2016 (unless it grows on me a ton) says it all

First impressions: this is the Owen record I've always wanted.

But seriously, I enjoyed my first listen a lot and I feel this is something I'm going to come back to. Tbh I'd much rather they release an album stylistically similar to their first LP than try and do something completely different at this point. Maybe if they were a band who already had 2-3 full lengths under their belt I'd feel differently, but as it stands I'm perfectly fine with them continuing in the same vein on LP2. Keen to dive into the lyrics more once my copy of the record arrives.

I have the feeling from interviews this is not their last lp - and new one(s) might be coming soon!

This reminds me a lot of Intersections by IIOI at various points.

but then again, i've also said that intersections reminds me a lot of american football, so, full circle

Idk that first American football record has an element that I hear in very few records, idk what it is but the art just feels so authentic and the music breaths in a way little music does. The cool jazz influence is all over it and makes it very unique

tbh i haven't gotten around to this yet. i kinda pushed it off of my priority list when he started being an idiot online. still like lp1 fine but i never really got the crazy acclaim for it. not even one of his top three or so projects

I dno I feel like LP1 totally deserves the acclaim it gets. Even if you don't like the music itself, it's hard to ignore how influential that album became

the lead up to the last album was marketed like, "he went into a cabin to record" and i said "this is so cliche now lol" or something and then he was salty in an interview later on about it.

Everything Evan Weiss touches is great.

What makes you say that? Just trying to see where you are coming from.

  21. Everything Evan Weiss touches sounds almost identical. Haha.

But really, I really enjoyed the 52 Weeks album because the concept was so cool. I also really like the newest Pet Symmetry album. It's really hard for me to tell most of his other projects/records apart though. He has a very distinct style that he does not stray away from ever.

This thread is starting to get weird. IIOI is great. American Football is great.

This new record is rad. It's hard for me to compare it to the first LP when there's a 17 year difference between the two. I first listened to the original LP when I was 17/18 and the album just connected to me perfectly with what I was going through at the time in my life. Things have changed a lot in the ten years for me since so I came into this album not expecting the same revelatory experience that I had with the original LP, but it's an excellent release that I probably won't connect with the same in the long run. All those years of listening to grindcore in between probably ruined my tastes. :)

I'm just pissed I can't make the record release show because Bear vs. Shark has to play Chicago for the first time in forever on the same night. Oh well, if that's the biggest complaint I have in my life at the moment, then things are good.
