Yeah I currently have 2 kallax double cubes, and 3 double cubes of some other brand I got back in.....2017? They might be expedit. I like them compared to the kallax because they have a a backing board so they're closed in the back where the kallax is wide open.

oddly enough, the closest in quality i've found to the Kallax is Target's brand. we got my partner a 2x2 for his Magic The Gathering collection, and it's more or less identical to the Kallax, save for a slight difference in dimensions, iirc.

side note: having a partner who buys expensive cardboard as a hobvy while you buy expensive plastic as a hobby makes for some interesting purchasing decisions and opportunities to pass on your habits to your significant other, lmao.

I have the 2x3 Target version of the Kallax and haven't had any issues with it.

The kallax are on both ends, if you zoom in you can see they're just BARELY taller than the 3 others I have. Besides being open cubes, the only other noticeable difference is the thickness of the sides. I wish I remembered where I got the other cones from, cuz it'd be nice to have an even number to have the correct dimensions for stacking.

Yeah the middle unit on mine is actually a 4x4 Expedite. Me and my buddy swapped. He took a 2x2 Kallax and gave me a 4x4 Expedite. The inch difference doesn't bug me too much and who can say no to more space, amirite?!

More space means the need for more records to fill said space.

Win/win situation if you ask me!

You can buy kallax backing on etsy too if that appeals to anyone.

i have an odd situation with my Kallax shelves where the first one i bought was the grey one, but when it came time to buy another, it looked like they discontinued that color, so i bought black. surprisingly, however, the difference in colors works because the grey one is by the window side of our living room, so it works with the natural light, while the black one is closer to the door and the other black shelves we own. so all in all, it works despite the difference in color.

I think it might be fun to do a 2023 roundup of our respective collections. Here's mine:

    Records Added: 382

Gear Upgrades: Replaced my LP120, added a CD player to my setup, ordered new steel shelving (with a current ETA of May...)

    Highlights/Grails Acquired
    1. AFI - Sing the Sorrow (indie, AFI Store, 20th anniversary box set versions)
    2. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie boxset
    3. New Order - Substance
    4. Duran Duran - Rio
    5. Sufjan Stevens - Michigan (Third Man Great Lakes variant)

    2024 Goals
    1. More metal
    2. More historic releases, specifically the 1950's through 1970's

My biggest hopes for 2024 are probably Paper Walls and Mapping An Invisible World.

had a minor panic attack earlier after i heard discussions about the consequences of putting a stabilizing weight on your belt-driven turntable. i upgraded my old AT-LP120-USB to an AT-LP120XBT-USB after fucking up my tonearm and motherboard while trying to replace my antiskate spring, and both models are direct drive. while my stabilizing weight, AT618a, is also Audio-Technica, i freaked out thinking it would affect direct drive players as well, but apparently the case. anyone else with a direct drive player have problems with stabilizing weights? any problems with your motors (i.e. wonky wow & flutter, reduced overall speed, etc.)?

    Awesome!

Personally prefer not to recap my accquisions this year, I'd probably get physically ill haha.

But I will post my final accquisions of 2023.

Just dropped my boys back to their mother and forgot that my Living Sacrifice order was still addressed to my "house".

Also I've been obsessively listening to Koyo this past week. "What's Left to Say?" has been on constant repeat hitting me in the feels... Needless to say I just nabbed a copy off Amazon.

    I'm done.

actually going back and looking at my records added and goals for next year:

new additions (inclusive of 7" & 10"s as well as 12" LPs): 87

    highlights:
    Ellie Goulding - Halcyon Nights
    Sleep Token discography
Bad Omens - The Death of Peace of Mind (since a ton of variants were sold out)
    TTYD! score (about damn time)
    Circa Survive - Violent Waves
Sufjan Stevens - Javelin (the seaweed variant) & 5 Unreleased Songs
    MUTEMATH - S/T

    goals for next year:
buy another Kallax (if it'll fit)
hopefully acquire the remaining NIN records i need (since there's no chance in hell for more definitive edition represses at the moment, because, money)

I've lost track of how long the definitive editions of The Slip and Year Zero have been "coming soon". Ten years? Twenty? Those are the only two I'm missing, so I also wouldn't object to them finally seeing the light of day.

they've been "coming soon" for about 6 years now. the record store owner in my hometown ran into Trent at an LA bar back in 2018 and asked him why the other definitive editions were taking so long, to which he replied "money". i'm sure they'll see the light of day, since With Teeth and some other long-promised score work ended up receiving pressings the past few years, but it is annoying that it's taking so long. need both The Slip and Year Zero, but would also love all six volumes of Ghosts at some point.
