I mean, no? lol. Say Anything was directly influenced by the Saves The Day. Each of their first albums, Coheed and MCR fit directly into how the scene sounded at the time then it grew off there. Sorry, I'm just like that couldn't be more wrong.

id assert that it’s the last good thing bemis did. He has a treasure trove of great songs pre-real boy. My god, did I rock out to all those songs. Glad they finally had a proper release later on, but disappointed that I had written off all of his newer work by that time.

No need to be sorry. Genre's don't really mean much and "scenes" mean even less. I'm not arguing that they weren't part of that scene I'm just saying that they could have been part of a lot of scenes and the only reason we consider SA an emo band is because those were the bands they ran with.

Just look at "grunge". Nirvana was directly influenced by The Pixies but they were paired with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam even though Soundgarden was a metal band and Pearl Jam was a bluesy rock band. Smashing Pumpkins have more in common with My Bloody Valentine than they do with Babes in Toyland.

EDIT: Hit post too soon. In summary, grunge...like punk or emo...is more of a vibe than a sound.

There are good songs post-IRAB. If you were around back then you might remember how Bemis was marketed. I remember the APPEAL of SA back then was that Bemis was mentally unwell and wrote an album way ahead of it's time. I think I even remember stories romanticizing how he set the studio on fire (I might be remembering this wrong). His mental illness was used to market the band's authenticity.

I also remember for a time, Bemis DID get well, but people didn't like the music as much, it wasn't as honest. It sounded like someone trying to sound like they were mentally unwell. So if you're Bemis, and the only good thing you ever did was at a time when you were mentally unwell, and it's your career, well...what did anyone expect?

I think IARB is the best marriage of musical theatre/Broadway-type grandeur and emo/pop-punk/whatever 2000s rock you want to label it. Stuff like American Idiot, Black Parade and Razia’s Shadow coincidentally followed and did a great job, but it captured a mania and talent at its peak that can’t be replicated.

 

But American idiot sucks shit

generally speaking is the self-titled record not considered the 2nd best thing since IARB? I might personally put that one over IARB...

 

I don't know but S/T remains my favorite release.

Revisiting it also depresses me because that version of the band seems eons apart from the current one, like we're now in the darkest timeline or something.

 

Self-titled had some of my favorites. But damn was there that massive miss of a run that never did anything for me:

Property > Death for my Bday > Young Dumb Stung

 

Also, Spotify settled the debate.

 

S/T is their best followed by M/M ep

 

In Defense and Hebrews are both better than the self-titled for me despite it having some of the best songs he ever made.

 

Don’t know how someone can listen to a song like Crush’d and think “this is the best Say Anything album”

As for Hebrews, it’s a fine experiment until the “SWASTI-KUHHHH” moment. Then it’s a physical effort not to switch it off.
