  3. Yeah Rory’s always dropping something at the end of the year that completely fucks my list up. Looking forward to the record though. Akai Solo too

Yeah it's album of the year list, not album of January to November but also last December lists.

I just saw Rolling Stone picked sza as best of the year, which notably didn't come out this year

yeah it’s insane to me when people try to argue against this. If it came out in 2022? Guess what! It did not come out in the year 2023! Makes me feel like I’m losing my mind

What if it came our right around new year’s eve in a timezone where it was still 2022 whereas in a different timezone it was 2023

billy woods and Danny Brown take it easily for me. Earl in third place I guess, not a lot grabbed me this year

  17. Yep. Danny Brown is 2 for 2. billy woods and Earl would be after that. I enjoyed the Doja Cat record. Not a hip-hop heavy year for me unfortunately

It was a bad year for hip hop, a disastrous year for mainstream hip hop

Did a Beastie Boys discog run over the weekend. It still blows my mind that a group of guys actually listened to complaints about sexism and blatant homophobia and not only apologized (with absolutely no excuses) for past behavior but actually took direct action to affect change. I can't think of many other artists of any medium who have owned up like that.

A lot of Licenced to Ill was done tongue in cheek and was supposed to be direct jabs at people who acted that way. The problem with that was the joke went completely over their head and just saw Fight... as a party anthem and not the piss take it was. Which exactly why they switched things up almost immediately with Paul's Boutique and lost them a shit tonne of those frat boy dickhead fans. Gotta admire them for that too, most would just continue making the same stuff to make money.

For sure. There are some pretty huge bands (blink obviously comes to mind) that certainly would lose a lot if they were to make a move like that and reckon with their past. I was just reading a history of the Warped Tour the other day from a female perspective where they discussed being pretty grossed out by the "joking" requests for all ages girls to take off their bras.

But, yeah, a lot of those early Beastie lyrics were joking, but I think that's what made their honest reckoning with it so powerful. They didn't use that line of defense. Instead, they listened to criticisms and simply apologized.
