Feels like it could be a weird year for lists. All the frontrunners seem like albums that would slot into the 5-15 spots in most years. I wonder what the consensus pick will turn out to be.

Personally disagree with this. Caroline, Wednesday, Jessie Ware, Sufjan, and Ratboys (just naming a few) released great albums this year that would easily slot in the top 5 regardless of the year IMHO.

Been seeing Lankum near the top of a lot of lists. Not a band I’m very familiar with.

Really nothing against any of those albums, but I just don't think any one of them is a clear heavyweight in the way that Renaissance, Bolt Cutters, Norman Fucking Rockwell, and a bunch of other recent consensus favorites were. This seems more like a vote-splitting year than a clear winner year. Or, if you prefer, more of a 2021 than a 2022, 2020, or 2019.

I'm either really old, or very out of the loop (both, probably), but I went through all those links and, uh, haven't heard of like, 98% of the bands/artists/albums.

was about to heap praise on every publication showing restraint by waiting until the end of the month before posting their lists, but then i saw uncut's list was published on the 7th of november lmao

Nourished by Time is starting to click with me a bit more on this listen. Good stuff. Idk if I fully get the Blue Nile influence, but I enjoy this.

Yeah straight up this year was a weird one, with a lot of great albums, but not a lot of obvious ones that the vast majority is gonna agree on or have heard.

There’s still a lot of albums I love, but this year was easily the worst year for music since I started actively listening to music like 15 years ago

Personally I've had a pretty good year but probably only have like 5-10 records that'll stay in my rotation. Most of my disappointment this year comes from older bands putting out late career misses.

I think I'm a little less enthusiastic about this year's crop of albums than I have been for the last three years, but at the same time, this year was awesome because like half the bands on my "they're definitely never making another album again" list came back and made really good shit.

I've been thinking this for about a dozen years now. These lists always get worse and more obscure, somehow.

I also always do the exercise of trying to check out stuff that seems intriguing after glancing through the lists, and RARELY if ever walk away with anything new that I enjoy.

Have to just accept that fact that I like what I like, and for the most part, it ain't what the critics like.
