Just got out. Weak villain obviously. Absolutely loved this though. It was just a blast the entire time

 

Why is it so difficult for Marvel Studios to figure out utilizing good impactful villains?

 

Okay, well, in Secret Invasion, it ends with the President declaring war on the Skrulls. In The Marvels, Carol calls up Valkyrie to take a large group of Skrulls to earth. For safety.

Sure, one could say Carol had no real way of knowing about the whole war thing. But Fury and Valkyrie know. So… while it is entirely possible they could just say Carol didn’t know and Valkyrie knows it’s risky but wants to help anyway, it comes off as very odd to send them to earth.

There may be more, not sure what they were referencing above, but that jumped out to me when they said it.

 

Also in Secret Invasion, the Skrulls said they had no other planet to go to yet clearly they were living on another planet already.

 

To be clear, I haven’t watched Secret Invasion. But my friend brought this up after the movie and my counterpoint was that maybe Skrulls aren’t a unified race. The ones from SI could simply have no connection to the ones we see in The Marvels. If this is covered in the show then just ignore me, it’s just simply my guess without knowing everything that happens in the show.

 

i saw this earlier today and it was so fun. hardly anyone in my theater though. there were probably 6 people total in that screening.

also i got a free poster and that was cool.

 

My showing tonight was actually sold out. I was surprised

 

Honestly I’ve already forgotten most of what happens in the show. But the bigger point was the one about earth not exactly being a safe haven for the Skrulls after secret invasion. If I’m a skrull, why the hell would I trust Fury/Danvers

 

I mean the leader in the movie says they have no other choice but to accept Valkyrie’s help. This faction of Skrulls might not have any idea Earth isn’t safe for them. But I’d also say that New Asgard is probably the one safe place on Earth for them. I don’t really have a desire to watch the show, so I’d be fine with them just ignoring it. They don’t necessarily have to retcon it, but could just not acknowledge it further.

 

Could it just be that they're setting up a plot point where the president wants to attack New Asgard for harboring the Skrulls and so they send in the Thunderbolts? Maybe that's what that film will be about and borrow from the Siege event with Thunderbolts replacing the Dark Avengers and the president replacing Norman Osborn.

Also, isn't the president in Secret Invasion going to be replaced with Harrison Ford's take on Thunderbolt Ross in Cap 4? So what he declares probably doesn't really matter.

 

I'd be surprised if they ever acknowledge Secret Invasion again beyond the obligatory "Wow I must've missed a lot!" scene in Armor Wars from Rhodey

 

Imagine being a president elect inheriting an intergalactic war with shapeshifters lol

 

This was very fun. Most entertained I’ve been consistently through of the recent marvel movies. Pumped about the mid credits scene too!

and next week has Hunger Games for competition

 

I think a lot of people just aren’t motivated to see it, the marketing was really bad. Made it look like something that was going straight to streaming.

 

The common point I've been seeing people make is that people might even be waiting for it to hit streaming.

 

Yeah. Or people waiting for Disney+, which is just as bad. If you release a movie in theaters and it has people waiting to see on Disney+ then you didn’t do a good job at marketing it.

 

Yeah exactly. As a marvel fan, I can say that is what I am thinking.

 

D+ is a double edged sword for them, because streaming has necessitated for the movies to actually be an event to justify the purchase. The quality hasn’t been there to match the customer needs, so hopefully they finally light a fire under their butts and do something about it

 

I think it’s the lack of interest and/or knowledge of the characters. Unless you watched wandavision or ms marvel on Disney+ then you have no idea who those characters are when you watched the trailer for the marvels. That obviously didn’t help people want to watch it.

 

I do have to wonder what earns them more money in the long run. Cause on the one hand if people are continuing to subscribe, then that's a consistent source of income, whereas a movie ticket is a one-time purchase and you can't count on people seeing a film multiple times.

 

I read some discussion on this on Reddit, and the counter-argument, or parallel argument depending on how you look at it, is that people saying things like this might be a detriment.

Because you actually don't have to see all the previous stuff to understand most of what's happening. I do it because I want to, and I'm sure some people will look at it that way anyway, but the truth is the films generally provide the broad strokes within the films for the audience. They give enough to explain what's happening so they don't feel lost.

But if you have people constantly telling other people that they have to see this or see that, then they'll get frustrated and not even bother trying. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. People believe they have to see everything so they never do.

 

Although I get what you're getting at, if they don't recognize the characters to begin with, that's an issue. And that is kind of true, if you haven't seen Ms. Marvel then you may not care about her, and if you haven't seen WandaVision then you might not recognize that Monica is the same character from the first movie grown up.

Actually, some people on Reddit were also speculating that the first Captain Marvel movie might have done so well only because it was between Infinity War and Endgame, and if it was released at any other time, it might not have done as well. It's an interesting thing to think about.

 

If you’re just a casual audience member and you see this trailer and never watch Disney+ you’ll have no idea what’s going on. Of course people on a Reddit page would know about the disney+ shows so a counter argument from there doesn’t hold much weight.

There were many reasons why this movie bombed ranging from 2 of the 3 main characters being introduced on Disney+ shows, the mcu brand name in general going downhill, and the lack of interest from the marketing mostly due to the actresses not being able to promote it.
