SOJA into Your Vegas before an Everclear headliner was probably my weirdest. In 2011 or 12 I booked a guy playing his Gameboy before an easycore band before a folky-alt-emo band, and made this flyer for it in fucking Powerpoint lol. It ruled

With the exception of radio shows, the only “weird” lineup I’ve seen that comes to mind for me is Plague Vendor opening for Deftones in 2015. But PV also has a history of opening for bands not of their scene/style

  3. My high school/college pop rock bands played so many shows with funk and metal bands that cross-genre shows barely stand out to me, but one of the fun ones was a progressive metal band opening for the Front Bottoms and Cheap Girls (not a tour lineup that aged well).

Oh yeah, I think Plague Vendor also opened for Suicide Silence when they went nu metal.

Only show coming to mind was Ceremony's release show with Pissed Jeans and Marissa Nadler. Felt bad for Marissa Nadler cuz she's this quiet solo loop pedal guitarist, and the bar was too close to the stage. The chatter and bar noise was so loud and she just looked defeated by it all.

Thinking about it more, I've actually seen A Wilhelm Scream have a real rough go of it on certain shows (opening for BoySetsFire in CT; opening for Dropkick Murphys in Worcester). On paper it made sense but man oh man, were the fans of the headliners just not having 'em.

The BSF show hit a point where the singer from AWS was being openly antagonist and told the crowd they were cutting any song with "anything even remotely resembling a breakdown" from the setlist after somebody kept yelling for them to play "heavier shit." LOL

Now that I think about...remembered a couple more...

Peaches opening for Nine Inch Nails (she ruled!)
Asher Roth opening for Blink (this was sooooooooo bad)
Lizzo opening for My Morning Jacket (crowd was NOT feeling her, but it was fun)

  8. That's so weird. BSF/AWS seems like a surefire hit pairing. State Champs (Finer Things era) opening for Motion City Soundtrack was a similar one for me. The MCS crowd wasn't hostile but wanted nothing to do with the State Champs's brand of pop punk.

That's a shame I'm glad I saw her as a headliner during one of the Noise Pop shows in San Francisco pre covid. Hopefully you got to see her in a better setting.

This is probably a part of a larger tour I imagine right?

    Tomorrow I’m going to
    Pain of Truth
    Koyo
    A Life’s Question
    Vomit Forth
    Adrienne
    Balmora
    XnomadX

that’s a hell of a mixed bill and I’m down for it.

Another weird show that comes to mind is a rap/post-hardcore local band open for Sumac and Endon. But it also kind of worked. It was held in a brunch place after hours.

LOL YEP. 2017. That’s one reason why they entered band purgatory

Hi bay area guy named Jon. I'm also bay area guy named Jon. Maybe she'll roll thru for Noise Pop 2024, since they don't mind bringing back artists year over year

You'd think so, right? I think a big part of it was the era. BoySetsFire were on Wind-Up at the time so it was a weird mix of whatever the 2003 version of "hard rock radio" guys were at the time and hardcore try-hard "scenesters" which... Isn't the AWS vibe at all sonically or aesthetically.

In hindsight it makes a lot of sense but in the moment they were too fast and not heavy or melodic enough.

EDIT: Your comment also reminded me of a show I saw around the same time at the same venue where I saw Tsunami Bomb and Over It open for MCS and the crowd could not have been less enthused with the openers.

No, not a big chain. Just a small hole in the wall small local business that served breakfast and brunch and would close. And then occasionally open up in the evening for punk/punk-adjacent shows.

Saw Big Freedia open for The Postal Service on their first reunion tour, crowd was confused.

This reminds me, this summer LCD Soundsystem, Idles and Big Freedia toured together, but the crowd was really into it.

Tsk tsk MSC fans for not liking Over It. I think they opened every tour for every pop punk band in 03 and won the crowd over every time I saw them.

my favorite mixed genre show was when my cousins poppunk/powerpop band Tooth Fuzz (now Stalemate) was booked as a middle act for Dog Fashion Disco, and the band opening was named either Punished Existence or Morbid Infestation (one was the name of the band and one was the name of their first song, dont remember which was which but it always made us laugh)

im sure ive been to a ton, but the other one that stands out is one night i saw Jimmy eat world, new found glory, sugarcult, OK Go, and... breaking benjamin? lol

Just thought of another one. Poppy opening for Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction was interesting
