Bump the brakes. The riff in Brohemian Rhapsody is one of the best in their entire discography.

Say what you will about artificial intelligence but at least it’s punk enough not to use any writers.

People talking about the number of co writers mattering are people who don't listen to hip hop or R&B

There may actually be 100 credited co writers on Beyonce's latest album

You’re not punk unless you write your songs in isolation and you work your own merch booth

I always think it’s funny when I see someone say “the song had ____ writers and the lyrics are still bad!” because a lot of people think writing songs = literally only the lyrics

if this breakdown is accurate, and I mean no shade to you with that comment, then it completely explains/reinforces why I dislike so many of these songs. Many of the songs listed here are among my least favorite on the record.

How much do you have to contribute to a song to be considered a co-write? 100 for an album does seem a bit excessive

Probably just be in the room? Lol. Generational Divide had 7 writers, and it's 44 seconds long. But everyone in the production group they worked with on that one got a writing credit

I think it's partially up to the band/artist for who receives credit

A lot of those will come from samples or interpolations of existing work. See also Robert Smith getting a writing credit on this album because Fell In Love's synth riff sounds like one of The Cure's songs, or Right Said Fred being "co-writers" on Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift.

    Things have changed.

Generational Divide was a much longer, multi-part song they chopped down. All the songwriters for the full song got credit even though their part(s) might have been cut.

Definitely. There are some bands where every member gets a writing credit sort of by default even if they really contributed nothing but maybe tracking their instrument (blink is one of these bands, I believe). There are other bands where their guitar player might write and track multiple guitar solos on a track yet they still aren't given a writing credit because they didn't contribute to the main parts of the arrangement (main melody, main riff, main lyrics, etc.) It's not really consistent because it's just sort of at their discretion.

What does DIY twitter think about co-writers though

That's the only thing that matters

Some added context: the Beyonce album has that many credits because it's a sample heavy album. She didn't gather 100 people up and ask them all to help her write songs. The concept of the album is more or less to tell the history of dance music.

  25. birdman

    Yes, it's me

I could name a handful of previously great bands that would benefit from some co-writers now that they are older and have lost a little bit of their earnestness.
